Pads and Backing Plates?

So I have a few more questions here:

1. Compounding - Wool Pad, Waffle Foam or Flat Foam? I have personally always used waffles, but I seen more than a few mention to use Wool here. Suggestions? Differences?

2. Backing Plates - I already have a backing plate for my rotary, do you tend to use your rotary and switch out a 6.5 and 3, or do you also use a DA?

Are these the correct plates for the smaller pads?

Meguiar's 6.5" Velcro Rotary Backing Plate

Buff & Shine 3" Backing Plate 5/8" Thread Rotary

1. Depends on the level of correction needed. I use both, but typically it's foam unless I'm removing sanding marks or the vehcle needs some serious correction. I like flat pads more, but I do use both styles. I also like using wool on larger more wide open vehicles (trucks).

2. I match my backing plate for the size of pad I'm using. One rotary (Dewalt)has a 6" plate for larger wool pads. The other (Makitia) has a 4.75" plate that I use for most my foam pads. On a rare occasion I will swap it out for a 3.5" BP when I need to use 4" pads. For the most part I only use my PC for applying waxes/sealants. I do tend to you my Flex 3401 a lot for the final buffing step though.

Hope this helps,

Rasky

Okay, Well I have a Dewalt rotary that has a backing plate for the biggest pad which is 8'' ... the 6.5 will obviously not fit on the bigger backing which I would obviously require the 6.5 backing, and the same for 3 and 4'' the 3'' backing will work correct?

Also, do the backing tend to be switchable between rotarys and DAs?

Generally you can use a slightly-small plate but if you apply a lot of pressure you can have it cookie-cutter the back of the pad.

Only with an adaptor as rotaries take female-thread plates and DA/ROs take male-thread ones. I don't use the adaptors and I'd sure Loktite it if you try 'em.

Pays to have an assortment on hand IME. On my M3, for some reason a Meguiar's 7006 worked a *lot* better than any of my wool pads :nixweiss Normally I'd reach for wool when doing really aggressive work as it's just safer than foam for that sort of thing.

I do the initial correction via rotary as required (if not my Flex 3401) and I finish up with a DA/Random Orbital...but that's just me.
