Pad Dilemma

So I finally got a PC 7336 from Lowes (I had a 10% off coupon!!! which was nice). So now my dilemma:



1) CMA DM-KIT = $59.00 Backing plate, wool pad, 1 yellow, 2 white, 1 grey, 2 wax removal bonnets.



2) Top of the Line- ~$56.00 total- 7.5" Durafoam pads, 6 for $45 plus backing plate $11. I would probably get 2 yellow, 2 white, 2 gray.



I doubt I would use the wool pad or the wax removal bonnets.



My plan is (This is on a 28-year old paint job):



Yellow pad- DACP

Optional- Yellow pad + 3m SMR for Dark cars (not sure if I'll need this after DACP)

White Pad- S100 SEC

White Pad- Mothers Glaze (maybe grey pad?)

Grey Pad- S100



All to be removed with MF (which I have).



So, am I better of with the TOL or CMA? Anybody have opinions?

Hmmm, no opinions?



What about the CMA Orange pads? If I bought 4 of those would that be another alternative? Can I apply wax with an orange pad? Or would I still need a grey pad?



Any other alternatives?

Too many alternatives to list.

If you call Meguiar's and ask for their WDAV99 Pad kit with the velcro backing plate, you will spend about $40 including shipping.

For this you will get:

1 - W-64DA 5" Velcro backing plate

2 - W-8006 6.5" Polishing pad

1 - W-9006 6.5" Finishing pad



Use the white pad that came with the PC for your SMR

One polishing pad for your SEC

One polishing pad for your Mother's glaze

The finishing pad to apply liquid wax or sealant

S100 is so easy to apply and remove by hand that the PC would probably take longer and not do any better job.

Dom- On your older paint (I have some older, single-stage cars), I'd think you just MIGHT want the wool pad after all.



Not sure which vendor I'd go with (do business with both), but I guess I'd say TOL. I THINK there have been some wear/durability/something issues with the CMA orange pads, but I'm not sure.



Which pad to use with your glaze? Opinions differ. Maybe Forrest will chime in, he's the Mother's expert!

I'm leaning towards the TOL, but maybe a different combination of pads (6 for $45). Maybe 2 yellow, 3 white, 1 grey.



I was in Home Depot last night and got one of those convert your orbital to hook and loop kits for $3 and change. The kit comes with two 5" hook and loop pads that have an adhesive on the back that you just stick to your backing plate (I have a 6" backing plate, but I think the smaller hook and loop size shouldn't matter).

Dom- Not to sound TOO pessimistic, but I'd get the velcro backing plate anyhow. The adhesive on the kit you got might just fail (yeah, twice) at the worst possible moment(s). I'd get the velcro backing plate and keep your kit for when IT self-destructs (it'll happen someday). It's not like it's some big weakness or anything, but still...



When applying the self-adhesive velcro, just center it carefully and it'll work fine.

I have mixed feelings on using the adhesive-backed velcro adapter too. I actually use this, but the velcro bond between that and the pad is so incredibly strong once you use the PC, that it can try to pull the adapter away from the backing pad when you try to remove the foam pad...



I'll probably try to get my hands on a W-64DA sometime. :rolleyes:
