P1456 on the OBD reader - gas cap the likely culprit?

I am working on a 1999 Honda accord coupe that had it's check engine light turn on, convenient right after getting a registration renewal requiring a smog check (zing!).

I connected an OBD 2 reader and it gave a P1456 code which indicates some kind of evaporation leak.

I popped off the gas cap and found the rubber seal has a couple cracks, one of them quite large.

Do you guys think this would be the likely cause of the leak?

Or am I looking at something more serious, like a bad valve, etc?

Pics are below, the biggest crack can be seen in the upper left area.

All advice is appreciated, thanks again.

Reset the light first and see if it comes back on, if it does replace the cap, if it comes back there is a leak somewhere else.

As a follow-up, the new gas cap did the trick.

Unfortunately, the CEL lit up after 100 miles and this time the OBD reader is saying P1164. Which looks like the primary A/F sensor is going bad. Which is really sucky because the accord uses an ULEV F23A4 engine, which apparently uses a special A/F sensor that you can pretty much only buy from Honda, and runs about $250-300 for the part alone.

When it rains, it pours =(.

well, everything ended much better than i expected. I used the obd reader to clear the p1164 code, filled up the gas tank to max, tightened the gas cap, and had the car driven 200+ miles before I decided to start pulling and replacing parts. And for whatever reason, the code never came back. The car passed the smog test with flying colors, so I'll take it as a lesson learned, don't be in too much of a hurry to start replacing parts.

glad the issue is fixed. Also if you need a 02 sensor you do not have to go to the dealer. They will usually run about $100 a lot of times even less then that depending on what kind you decide to purchase.

a quick search yielded me some great results. 02 Sensor will actually help yopur car run better and help with your gas mileage.

I found a Denso 02 sensor which i have used for $55 brand spanking new. Very easy to replace as well.
