otc rotary suggestions

I've been using Meg's ultimate compound with success great results, but I was wondering if there are better otc compounds for removing heavy swirling. The ultimate takes a very long time to get rid of swirls. I'm looking to cut back on time as I can't keep doing swirl removals as long as its taking.

And as of right now a DA or RO are not an option, so don't suggest them lol.

I'm using Meg's soft buff 2.0 maroon pad for cutting if that helps.

And again, I'm looking for otc as I currently don't have the option of ordering online.

What is your process when using UC? I've never had any problems running it with a g110 DA and Meg's SB yellow polishing pad.

How much experience with a rotary do you have? People here may be hesitant to guide you to one if you have little hands on experience with them, as you can go from looking great to oh :censored: in a split second!

What's wrong with a DA polisher? Nowadays with the right DA, pad, and chemical, folks have been able to get as good as rotary results using a DA.

The Meguiar's folks have noted over at their forum that the maroon cutting pad isn't recommended for a DA and that UC isn't recommended for rotary use.

I know Pep Boys carry rotaries for under $100 (don't know the names or spec's) along with Meg's M105, M205, their blue "mild" clay, as well as several other products in their Mirror Glaze line.

They're found in the body repair isle, usually it's the next isle over from the detailing section.

I know all about DAs and I'll be getting one as soon as I can, but like I said, right now its just not an option.

Just seeing if there was a better product than uc otc or not. If there isn't there isnt't. Not a huge deal, just seeing if I have other options.

As far as experience with a rotary, I've only done a few cars, but I have to start somewhere.

I kind of figured this thread would turn into a "just buy a said" thread quickly. But thanks anyways.

brownbob06- You say an RO/DA isn't an option....are you currently using a rotary polisher? You say a RO isn't an option, but you're using maroon pads, so I'm guessing you're currently doing it via rotary.

That maroon pad is very good for aggressive correction, especially via rotary.

Do you have an autobody/paint supply place in your area? Most towns have one.

Yes, currently using a rotary. And I do hace a small body and paint supply shop here in town, which is where I picked up the megs maroon pad and black finishing pad.

I also have an o'reilly's, advance, and carquest here.

I'm getting amazing results with UC on my red GMC pickup, just didn't know if there was anything better out there otc.

Auto Zone and some Pep Boys carry Meguiars m105 and m205.O'Reillys can order the same if they don't stock it at you local store.Selected WalMarts have D300 plus m105,m205. Car Quest is listed at Meguiars as a distributor of their products but the one near me has to special order everything.

There are 4 O'Reillys near me that I happen to get by on a regular basis. Only 1 of them carries Meg's Pro products, but they do have M105 and M205, as well as a few other #s. You can check and see what your local O'Reillys has. The bottles are very distinctive, all have that light brown/tan coloring to them (normally all grouped together, no matter what the range of actual products is), so you can pick them out quickly.

Sorry about the double post. So m105 cuts faster than UC? I thought I had seen elsewhere that UC had more cutting power. I currently use some of megs pro line as my o'reilly's carries it. There is an auto zone close by that carries m105 and m205. I was considering giving them a shot anyways.

In terms of generally cutting power, the ranking goes: M105, D300, UC. I have all three systems (105/205, D300/D301, UC/UP) and I find myself using 105/205 majority of the time. That meg's burgundy pad is really aggressive so be careful when teaming it up with 105.

It's been so long since I talked to someone who said, "I wish I hadn't spent the money on that good machine." It seems like it's never happened.

The Hitachi SP18VA can be gotten for well under two hundred dollars and has a 5 year warranty. I've been running the one I have every work day for years and it hasn't done anything but work - not even brushes - though I'm taking it in this week finally to have it gone over, not because it needs anything but just because it's been so good for so long I think it deserves it.

You don't hear much about UP. I like UC, but only tried UP once and wasn't impressed. Any tips on usage?

brownbob06- That jump from the burgundy pad to the black one might be a bit of a leap...you're talking about a black *finishing* pad, right?

And FWIW, most people find it hard to finish out 100% OK with M205 via rotary, even people who are better at that than Yours Truly.

Is there a pad/polish combo you'd recommend between the 2? I'm getting a vast majority of the swirling out with uc and the maroon pad, but it does leave some scratches. I have a bottle of megs pro swirl remover 2.0 as well.

Would maroon pad/ uc or m105, swirl remover 2.0/ ? Pad, megs ultimate polish/ black pad be a valid combo?

And I'd love to buy a DA or orbital, but as I stated a few times already, its just not a possibility at this moment. I have what I have and if need be can pick a thing up here or there. But for the most part I have a rotary, and I really don't see any sense in not learning to use the tools I have at my disposal.

I plan on ordering a gg6" sometime in the next few weeks though :D

I am not a big fan of UP either. It was on clearance at Wal-Mart for $4 so I figured why not. I find UP to be a classic case of a "tweener" product. IMO, both 205 and 301 are better finishing polishes and it doesn't exceed in filling in light marring. I have used with an LC black pad and an LC white pad on my Flex 3401 at speeds 4-5 with semi-slow passes. First few passes at speed 4 and then the last pass at speed 5 which i found helps "flash" the product.

Sorry for the double post - Something to consider would be to take a step down by using 105 with either a Meg's yellow polishing pad or an LC orange light cutting pad. These 105/pad combinations may have enough cut to remove your marring without leaving the subsequent hazing/fine scratches that you usually get with a Meg's burgundy pad.

I have a cheap Harbor Freight rotary that gets the job done...some of the biggest factors on whether you need a DA for the final polishing step is technique (of course) but also paint hardness/softness. I have a Flex 3401 as my primary tool but the cheap HF rotary beats it hand down when it comes to compounding speed.

Thanks for the answer, I was thinking of giving UP another try but at the price I paid, I could just as easily toss it. I have enough products that work just fine that I don't want to fight with this one. It's a shame too, because I really like UC.

MCA, I have (had) a cheap harbor freight that got the job done...but a couple hours ago it only started working on "Max" (which I never use anyways) so it'll be going back for a replacement this weekend. Sure am glad I paid the 10 bucks extra for the replacement plan now lol.

And I'll look into the megs yellow pad. I'll post up pics in a bit of what I'm dealing with. I'm getting decent results and I'm actually getting a lot faster as I figure out what techniques work for me. I think its taking a while though because this is a case of quite severe swirling I'm trying to get rid of.

I did pull the truck out into the sun today too to inspect it for holograms and swirls. I did have a spot of light holograms that my halogen light didn't pick up, but only in one spot. (I moved the truck around to get the sunlight at different angles to do a more thorough inspection.)

I will say that I got extremely lucky that the polisher didn't go out till all I had left was the part of the tailgate under the silver band, so I just finished it out by hand lol.

The M09 Swirlmark Remover 2.0 is primarily a concealer, with lots of oils and fillers. No way would I expect it to correct the micromarring from M105 (which also has enough oils to really fool ya too). Never tried the UP, but if it's anything like M205 the same goes for it too. And no, IPA wipedowns will not remove the oils 100% IME.
