Optimum Polish problem...unless I'm retarded!!!

I have a white 2003 Cobra vert. Its in storage, so I'm gonna get the paint as perfect as it can be, so here is the plan of attack.

Clay

SSR 2.5 with PC. orange pad

OP with PC, white pad

EX-P ATLEAST 3 coats

Nattys Topper.

So I started....I buffed with the SSR and it worked great....then I followed with OP and I swear it put the swirls back tht the SSR 2.5 took out. I used the white pad and started at 3 to spead the product...then made a few passes at 6....and I saw some swirls. Should I hit it with OP again, or SSR again and then go right to EX-P?

Two things - first, are you adequately breaking down the OP? It takes much longer than SSR2.5, the swirls you're seeing might be product residue. OP is fairly oily.

Second, did you wipedown with alchol/water after the SSR2.5? I've found that after polishing with SSR2.5 the product sometimes fills in some minor scratches as I polish (along with removing others), so I wipedown before I move on.

I wouldn't move right from SSR2.5 to ex-p. I'd figure out why the OP isn't working and try to make it work.

Good luck.

Maybe I should break it down more....the SSR 2.5 broke down sooooo easily, so I assumed the OP would take the same amount of time. I guess I should hit it with OP again.

Seems like at speed 3 on the PC it would take forever. I never use under speed 4.5 for polishing. If I do the results are always dissapointing.

In my experience, the Optimum polish/compound take a LONG time to break down compared to SSR 2.5, when using the PC.

Ya, if you're working it around at speed 3 then bumping it up to 6 I'd say it'll take a good 3-5 minutes for a 2x2 area to break down. SSR 2.5 breaks down in probably 50% (or less) of the time, so you have to trat them differently. You'll know OP is broken down when it's really easy to wipe the residue away (as in, it's almost entirely gone and takes no effort at all to remove), if it seems oily or sticky you need to work it more.

Cheers.

So I should re-apply the OP and basically double the time that it took for the SSR! I should have stuck wih my VM...it was alot easier to use!

I would reapply the OCP. Just move the PC slowly (1/2-1" per second slowly) and work for 2-3 passes and OCP should remove whatever SSR2.5 left behind.

Ya, OP is only so-so for usabilty on the PC, it rocks with a rotary though. On the plus side when used correctly it will take out moderate marring and leaves a really nice finish. Good luck.
