Optimum Polish and Hyper Compound: expired? Super-liquidy

Hi folks,

It's been a while since I've reached for the Optimum pair, but upon using them yesterday, they were extremely liquidy and not thick at all. I don't THINK that they were always this liquidy (again, been a while) and I couldn't get it to thicken up no matter how much shaking and even immersing the pair into warm water for 30 minutes. My products are always brought inside over winter, so it shouldn't be a storage issue as they are in the garage if not in the basement.

When I squeezed it out of the bottle, they come out in the consistency of water--not thick and creme-like at all. I was working on some light scratches on my friend's car (wasn't going to try on my own fleet :grinno:), and they seemed to still work. Though in retrospect, the working time was a lot less without a lot of lubricating oils?

Any thoughts? I just checked my online invoices, and they were purchased about 3 years ago, 7/22/09, meaning they were probably produced 3-4 years ago. Is it well beyond it's shelf life?

Best regards,

-G

Anything that old, I keep on a shelf for visual aides or detailing eye candy, but do not use. The new Hyper Polish (spray) is working very well for me. I have some IP200 from Mark V that is dated about 1994. This summer, I'll take a trip to UCSB's chemical recycling plant and rid myself of some things. :)

They are old. Throw them out. Hyper Compound never lasted long at all for me. I had a few go bad within a month and still have the full bottle with only 2 headlight restoration uses! The other was not even a quarter gone and same thing. Now I use the spray polish and compound. IMO much better working time and less dust and easier to apply. I know it sounds lazy saying easier to apply but after picking up, shaking, pulling a cap and squeezing a bottle hundreds of times a day compared to picking up a bottle, shake, and pulling a spray trigger, it makes a big difference on my hands being tired and cramped at the end of the day or week.

I've had that happen with a few products that I let sit for a long time. Usually takes 3-5 minutes of shaking to get them back.

Scott is right. Sometimes it takes 5 minutes of shaking straight or more. In my case, no matter what they did not thicken up.
