Opticoat and scratching

How well does opticoat resist marring? I've read that it helps, but can anyone give an idea of how much? Thanks.

That's just it, resists marring.

It's not bullet proof in a sense that it will prevent any scratching/chipping.

Anything that you think will scratch, will most likely still scratch the finish.

My thinking is that with careful washings using "Autopian" standards, it will extend the period before a swirl/RIDS removal would be necessary.

I thought Chris from Optimum mentioned that once hardened its a 9H on the hardness scale but some people question that (considering diamond is a 10)

If its similar to Gtechniq C1, there are a few videos on YouTube about C1 and scuff resistance where the person in the video is attempting to scuff a panel with the butt end of a plastic lighter. If C1 really was stopping that scuffing, its pretty impressive. I would guess OptiCoat would be along the same lines.

Im trying to get one of these advanced coatings on my car because the paint is so soft. Im not expecting it to stop every little scratch, but Ill at least breathe a little easier when people (or even me) go near the car in a parking lot, garage, etc

I think people have way too high of expectations for the scratch resistance on these coatings.

There is a good review on the geek showing the lighter test being more of a gimmick than anything.

These coatings shed dirt much more effectively then waxes or sealants do. Less dirt on the surface when you touch it with your wash mitt = less chance of marring....simple as that really.

Opti Coat provides better scratch resistance and contamination repellancy than any currently applied factory clear coats. Results will vary somewhat because of the substrate it will bond to.

The resins will harden to 9H but depending on the surface applied, results will vary. It will still be much harder than without. The lighter test is a gimmick and all it shows is a reduction in friction, not scratch resistance. You could apply WD40, wax, or even water to the paint and get the same results. You will never see an Optimum sponsored gimmick video.
