Open Element Air Filter on my Explorer

I had almost as much fun taking the pictures as I did installing the filter, so I had to share the pics somewhere!

Here is the stock air box. The conical filters are tough to find for some reason. I guess the majority of Explorers had the panel filter.

Here is the MAF bolted to the filter plate, and the rubber spacer/gasket installed on the MAF.

Finally, here is the unit installed.

....Also known as a short-ram intake. :D I got a Cold Air Intake on my Elantra. Dips down below the battery and sucks air in down by the splashguard.

Did you get any hp gains and does the car now sport a throaty growl?

Nice growl when I am gettin' on it. Otherwise its pretty normal. It’s hard to say about HP. It’s really a small change, and convenience for me. I don't have to look for filters anymore. The throttle seemed a bit more responsive, but it could have been my imagination (and that’s fine too). I am hoping for a little increase in MPG, but won't know for a couple of weeks.

Yea, you don't have to replace that one. But be sure to clean it every now and then or your performance will go down.

As far as MPGs go, I was told mine would go down. However, I haven't noticed a change yet. Seems the same.
