Before this thread gets out of hand, what's the difference between wash & vacuum, and wash, interior vacuum and dash? So he just washes and vacuums the "outside" for $20? :nixweiss

Those prices are way too low! No way would I bust my butt detailing a car for $45-that barely gets you a wash and wax on a small car that doesn't need any polishing-like a Miata.

I got a flyer in the mailbox today. The following prices are for cars, SUVS are more expensive.

Hand Wash including windows, vacuum, dusting, tire dressing $25.

Wash Wax Polish $60

Detail $115

This sounds like more what I would expect.

Maybe detailing is a hobby for him. Or maybe he doesn't know how to value his time. Some people set prices without considering the cost of materials and think their hourly wage sounds good. Others forget about the time and only consider the cost of materials. It reminds me of the grannies I used to compete with when I did crafts. They were happy to cover the cost of their materials; I was trying to make a living.

Perhaps the business is new and trying to draw customers.

Maybe, but even in 1993 when I was just getting started, I was charging more than that. I quickly learned that in the mind of most people that cheap prices=low quality. I raised prices and business increased.

I'm in Westchester County, New York.

A full detail here (wash, swirl remover, wax, interior, vac, detail, leather conditioner, door jams, etc.) from a good place that does a good job runs $165. I've had them do it on my older cars and I was quite satisfied. I won't let them touch my new cars though!

Keep in mind that of the 3,174 counties in the United States, Westchester County ranks 7th in personal income level. That's the top one-fifth of one percent of all counties. Perhaps $165 should be used as a "upper limit".

I went up to a guy today with a Harley Davison Edition F-150 and talked to him a minute and he said he has a guy detail his truck and only charges him $13!!!!!! no matter what I said he wouldn't make an appointment. GRRRRRR I even pointed out the swirl marks.

He probably couldn't afford the truck in the first place and now can't afford to get proper care for it. Those things are expensive!

I also wonder who Al Copeland's detailer is. I drove by his house today and he had 2 stangs out front, a Ferrari 360, a lamb, and a whole bunch of other crap. I'd like to go play with the 360 or the lamb.

Yea, I agree with everyone. That sounds low, but there are many factors that go into a price. The guy in town here charges $135 for a complete exterior detail only. Then again, he charges $425 for a tint job!

Its not about the quality of the job. Its about the area and the clientele the business caters to. I live in Somerset County, NJ and this is the third richest county in the nation. Therefore, the prices will be proportional to the income of people here. Im not as rich as many here are, so I went down to Harrison NJ (lower class area) and had the same tint job done for $150. Harrison is a much lower class area, and people can't afford high prices such as in Somerset County. Therefore they have to lower their prices for affordability or they would go out of business!
