oh god, that was MISERABLE

I decided to go all out with my car and get everything clean, decontaminated and ready for a polishing job at some point this week. Not my first wash and clay, but i was paying attention to everything.

I'm going to be looking for cost effective product suggestions because i went through a ton of stuff getting things clean.

First, There was baked on brake dust from the winter that was the worst i had ever seen (EBC brakes getting replaced with hawk ceramics next go). I'm glad i have chrome rims because i would have absolutely destroyed a painted surface getting this stuff off. I sprayed duragloss chrome wheel cleaner on there, let it sit and it did nothing but smell caustic (stuff worked fine on my buddies stang). Steel wool along with the occasional spritz of wheel cleaner eventually took care of the stuff after stepping up several steps in abrasiveness and getting nowhere. Fortunately, chrome is hard as all hell and there isn't any marring that i see.

Next was the engine compartment. I need to find something a little better than greased lightning for this task. Got it looking good, but I'd like something with a little more brute force to power through gunk in areas i can't reach with a brush. There's lots of nooks to get clean since i leave my engine cover off because it's a giant heat trap for the supercharger.

Next was the door jambs. Some mechanic decided to eliminate squeaks with a liberal application of white grease from a sprayer of some sort. It was absolutely disgusting and EVERYWHERE. greased lightning FTL, it wasn't touching it. I had a bottle of duragloss all wheel cleaner for painted rims, tested it in an inconspicuous spot (the door jamb) and it wasn't hurting anything, but was breaking up the grease slightly better, so i used that and a toothbrush and finally got the jambs clean. Used a lot of product though since i kept needing to flush dissolved gunk out.

Alright gentlemen, I need to replace these products and hopefully consolidate. I need a heavy duty cleaner that i can use for all that stuff. Wheels of all sorts, greasy engine compartments and door jambs. I want to consolidate products and I never want to go through that again, even though on another car at some other time, i probably will. Hopefully it comes in gallons.

Meguiar's Safe D Greaser is great. I have it and Wheel Brightener and these bottles:

I've got bottles for the safe D-Greaser in 2:1 (Engines, tires), 5:1 (bad jambs, etc) and 10:1 (interiors). I've got foaming sprayers on them, it's an awesome setup and I picked it all up for under 30 bucks.

My WB bottle is 4:1 with a foaming sprayer.

Thanks timmah, but apparently the safe d-greaser is a discontinued product. What do you recommend instead. APC+, Super degreaser?

APC+ if you want to use on jambs/as a bug remover on paint. Super Degreaser is usually paint safe but I wouldn't test the theory lol.

The foaming sprayers really make a difference too.

First thing that comes to mind with cost effective is meguiars Dline

APC(the green) can be cut and very effective as a degreaser with a little agitation, same as APC+. These can be your jamb cleaners. The + doesnt really foam as much and has a citrusy smell.

Super degreaser is great too, makes light work of grease and crap, good for wells and actually is a good wheel cleaner when used on appropriate wheels. The green APC cut heavy enough will clean wheels great too.

Wheelbrightner- bottom line tears the heavy stuff up. Read up on it and be careful with it. 4:1 is more than enough for me when I need it.

You can get APC(and/or APC+), superdegreaser, and wheel brightner in 32oz samples(and gallons when you need them) from ADS.

If you had to get just 1 product i would say the APC or APC+. Million uses for it.

Foamers are awesome like timmah said

Yeah, so, big thanks to timmah. Just used the wheel brightener and it works great. Of course, i just read the warning label and now have this feeling of impending cancer, but it's a small price to pay for shiny chrome rims.

And a big thumbs down for EBC redstuff brakes. They never quiet down, they dust like mad and they wear quickly. And the dust they leave is evil.

Not much beats Purple Power. It is easy to obtain, cuts thick nasty grease and oil like it wasn't there. Rinse well. Done and done fast.

You can was door jambs faster with a nice soft paintbrush. One with PP, one for rinsing off the PP, and a final with ONR. It is really fast, really easy, and finishes well.

I've heard good things about P21S Total Auto Wash.

Agreed!

Safe, effective, and if you don't get too over zealous, it can be economical too. Some degreasers are far too hard on surfaces and for your health. Total Auto Wash is rather gentle, but it works. I feel the same way about their wheel cleaner too.

If your considering P21s Total Auto Wash then do also consider SURF CITY GARAGE ROAD TRIP GRIME REMOVER.

Basically does the same stuff, i think a bit cheaper too. More effective IMO, American too! :chuckle:

Yeah, but it eats paint...fast...

Is P21s total auto wash good for leather and carpets ???

Nah, thats not cost effective.

Try high cut apc, like 10:1 or evern 8:1 for carpets. Wipe the leather down with apc, then hit it with lexol leather cleaner, and after that, lexol leather conditioner.

Is purple power really that strong? I know that any full strength APC/degreaser is pretty strong, but PP doesn't really seem to work on heavier jobs for me, and I use it on a regular basis. When I degrease engines, I use greased lightning because IMO it does so much better and cuts down on the work time.

On really trashed vehicles, I'll lightly spritz PP full strength prior to washing. Works wonders on white. I also use it full strength on clear coated wheels that need more than a wash but less than an acidic cleaner. Also great for tires and wells.
