NXT on Volvo S60 - 3 Coats & Question

I'd Buff It
Hi,

Long time lurk first post, love this place. This NXT product really got me hyped up so I ordered a bottle after hearing about the 20 cases available before public introduction. I've done my cars prior with the Klasse twins topped with P21s, but the NXT is really a nice shine and I find I like it better. I went over board maybe but I now have three coats of NXT on my S60. The first two I applied by hand using the purple applicator that came with the bottle, and buffed off with MF. Today I decided to apply and buff a third coat with my PC to see if it added to the shine. I am pleased with the results, this is really a good product and the PC made it pop even more. One question I had was I couldn't get my PC white pad clean with hot water and dawn dishwashing liquid. I kept squeezing it and it was just a mess and didn't dissolve the NXT out. Anybody have a suggestion on what to use to clean the applicator pads of NXT. I know it's early and many have not used this yet but maybe someone has an idea. Thanks !

Nice looking S60.

For cleaning the pad try using woolite or Murphy's oil. If that does not work, soak overnight in a bucket with dawn or the above.

I don't have answers to your question, but, as a Volvo owner I must praise your S60 :bow

Really looks great with NXT, great job. :xyxthumbs

(Oh, you could try a APC with watter on that pad)

I've had a hard time cleaning pads too. Its the polyglycerol esters in NXT, basically a thickening agent and fragrance carrier. This stuff is commonly used in cosmetics like hand lotions and skin care products, and in food products like salad dressings.

The stuff is supposed to be water soluble so my guess is to keep washing the pad until all the residue is gone.

I had the same problem - left pad overnight in Fairy liquid (UK Dawn) and then rinsed in washing machine - will see tonight whether it's worked but all wax seemed to have come out of pad this morning.

Just to chime in here,

I'm not a chemist, so I asked two with PhD’s.

Most glycerol esters are water soluble and aid in emulsifying oils, so they would aid in releasing oil from a foam pad when cleaning.

For the record, polyglycerol esters are emulsifiers that would help in the pad cleaning process.

Must be the Plutonium? :D

Gentlemen thanks for the pad cleaning tips.

I want to add the NXT did stain my plastic trim. I know the bottle had warnings but I wanted to test for myself how this product did on the infamous Volvo black plastic trim, I was wishing for no staining.

Today after a rain and my 303 wore off, the stains stood out like a sore thumb. After an initial panic and depression I easily removed it with a white drafting eraser. So be careful around trim.

Funny it did nothing to my Volvos trim. In fact, the residues wiped off with no effort. Easier to remove than P21S CW residues.

jgv,

That's interesting, now you have me second guessing my test. I was feeling the same way as you, that the residue was coming off as I buffed, maybe the spots I saw I missed buffing originally, since I was working inside. I do hope to see others post there results if NXT stains trim.

~One mans opinion / observation~

Nice work on the S60 Volvo.

I think that the newer Volvo are using a different composition on their vinyl because the newer models trim stains if you look at it the wrong way.

~Hope this helps~

Experience unshared; is knowledge wasted…/

Must be something.

My guess is the chemist that made the above comment has never washed a pad with NXT in it. It takes me a lot longer to get a NXT pad clean than it does other products. For example, the BMW I detailed last week was polished with DACP and the yellow Meg's pad. I washed that pad THREE TIMES during the polishing stage and all the polish and dirt came out easily each time. Not so with the NXT pad.

Just my experiences with the product. Folks with PhD's should take it FWIW.

Another data point:

Dawn did little to budge NXT from my applicators, either. However, I sprayed a few shots of "Greased Lightning" (like Simple Green, but a different brand name) into the pad and worked it around, let it sit for a few minutes, and rinsed. Came out fine.

So, Dawn won't cut it, but I'd guess almost anything along the lines of Simple Green, EF-HI, Meg's APC+, etc. will do the trick.

As bretfraz said, FWIW . . .

Could this be an indicator of how long the protection will last on your car? Or its resistance to dirt/salt/acid rain? Or am I reading to much into this?
