Just watching the Nova presentation of the building of the memorial at Ground Zero. What a moving presentation. Fantastic. Surreal. Memorable. We in the United States tend to have a very short memory. 10 years ago. We must never forget those that lost their lives to this heinous act of cowardice. Actual title of the program is "Engineering Ground Zero".

On a related not, there was a 9-11 Memorial in St. Louis' Forest Park last week. Over 3000 flags were assembled in front of the St. Louis Art Museum on what is called Art Hill, a grand expanse of lawn with huge fountains and lake at the bottom. The flags each had a sign of individual victims of the 9-11 tragedies. The signs included a picture of the victim, age, home town, where he/she worked and where he/she died. It was simply impressive at first. But as you walked among the flags and read tags it became very, very emotional. I was affected more than I thought I would be. Very sad. NEVER FORGET.

Sorry for the camera pics. It's all I had when I happened upon the week-long memorial which was completely done by volunteers.

Very impressive display. It is hard to believe it was 10 years ago - I remember it clearly, and yet until all the to-do surrounding the anniversary, it is easy to not think of the day - the horror seeing people leaping from the buildings to their death, and the horrific devastation. I guess it is a defensive mechanism - not to want to recall thiose memories. Yet we need to force ourselves to do so to spur whatever actions we can take to ensure that it never happens again. It is a fine line - to balance the "inconvenience" of things like screenings (but don't get me started - I think they are highly ineffective), profiling (yep - argue the civil righrts aspects but you cannot argue the ultimate effectiveness despite the highly charged political rhetoric), with the way Americans want to live their lives. I struggle to get a grip on how much freedom we are willing to give up in the name of keeping our country safe from these acts of terrorism. Can we really protect ourselves effectively? It is a terrible conundrum.
