Not your normal trim adhesive....

Had a customer bring me a car, while they were picking up another car, and ask me about some dried on trim adhesive. After further inspection I found that the hatchback (where the emblems are) had been repainted. Apparently the bodyshop had used something other than the normal trim adhesive that is easy to remove.

When the customer was debadging the car some of the paint came off and the adhesive is as hard as a rock. He has tried goo gone, goof off, acetone. I tried goof off as well with no luck. I was thinking about trying steam but wasn't sure what that would do to the paint.

I have a feeling that it's going to come down to another repaint for that area but wanted to check here in case someone had an idea.....Thanks!

Heat it up with a hot hair dryer or heat gun if you have that. That should loosen it's grip. Once you get the bulk of it off, attack it with some degreaser and a medium to heavy clay bar.

That might work, but you will probably need a plastic razor too.

Tried all that and nothing. I have a feeling that the "tool" that painted the back of this car used some other than what was supposed to be used for adhesive. A repaint is in their future. Tnx for the help guys!

What about using an adhesive remover, and finding a way to have it dwell on the stuff? A rag soaked with adhesive remover and held against the area for a long time might soften it up at least a little.

Gee, guess good adhesive removers are getting hard to find these days, what with VOC regs and all....

I am actually detailing this car in late April so I will give that a shot then. I am booked through 4/23 right now.....life is good!!
