NOT HAPPENING!!! Just found my first rust spot.

Anyway, I got all the salt off the Aurora from our little surprise snow storm, and there was a rust spot at the seam between the upper and lower panel behind the rear driver's side wheel. Yes, this does irritate me quite a bit.

Anyway, it looks like it is just starting, and the rust isn't too deep. Any recommendations on what to do? Take it to a shop, or could I do it myself?

You guys are great. Thanks for the help...two weeks, and I've learned a lot!

mogulmonster- Hard to say without seeing it, but if it's just minor surface rust, AND you can get to all of it, you might try one of the rust convertors (I use "Rust Avenger") followed by touch-up paint. If it's beyond that, I'd take it to a pro.

I can take a pic later today, but I think that it is down into the seam between the panels. I'll have to look closer when I'm not so shocked or mad. :D

It depends on a lot of things.

Unfortunately, it will not stop. Having owned well over 50 cars, I have yet to be able to whip the rust or corrosion problem. Anything else can be fixed, but the rust always comes back. If you can live with rust repair periodically, then that is what you will need to do.

I now drive a vehicle till the first sign of rust and then the vehicle is gone. Sounds drastic, I know, but it is the only thing that has worked for me.

Yeah, rust is cancerous...ask the '86 Jimmy that has been in the family for the last 16 years. :( makes me sad, I was brought home from the hospital after birth in it. :)

Anyway, if you feel comfortable with such types of repair as this, naval jelly is one thing that will eat rust alive.

I was actually thinking about offering to attempt to fix a spot on a teacher's car where I go to school...he/she (both work there) are my friends, but I suspect I would get paid...doesn't matter, though. What happened is the paint cracked and there is now a 2" long, 1.75" wide area of surface rust. I was hoping to have luck with sanding, naval jellying, "rust converting", then priming and painting.

food for thought.

and you have to start somewhere and could probably save a lot in the long run by learning yourself how to do this type of repair.
