Noise Maker Project

Son's '93 Prelude is a VTEC model that came with a one-of-a-kind 6x9 subwoofer in the center of the back seat backrest. Like the other 6 speakers in the car, it was totally shot. A new Honda sub was about $100 and hard to get, so we bought a pair of Kenwood 6x9" 3-way speakers and put one in where the sub had been. The car came with a small amp for the subwoofer and like most teen boys, my kid loves base. Well, the factory mount for the speaker about rattled the back seat area apart and sounded terrible. After about 3 weeks of insulatiing, bolting, pop riviting, etc, etc, I gave up and built an enclosure in the trunk for the single 6x9 speaker. Went to the audio store, studied their enclosures and went to work. Did I mention that woodworking is my least favorite task in the world? A lot of bad words, cuts, scrapes, particle board and carpet later, the thing sounds great! Now I just need to get back to detailing the engine bay and I guess I'll need to find another project to occupy my time soon. Hmmm, my daughter will be 15 in about 10 months or so, maybe I need to start looking for another car to "spiff up" for me, er, her use when she gets her license!

I know the "noise makers" all too well, as I was heavily into car audio a few years ago, but not so much anymore even though I've still got most of my equipment in perfect shape. Nothing screams cool better than a nice car with a hot stereo when you're young! :D

I've still got my JL subs in a custom JL box if you're interested in a great sounding system.

A Precision Power Inc. 400w amp pushes the subs! :D

Since I might be selling my car soon, I'm might sell my audio equipment separately...

you know good bass is not noise but rather complete audio...however too much boom is pointless and harmful...imagine a movie with no low end frequency? now imagine that on your favorite record.

Nice clean install Dan:)

I was in to the System competition a few years back. I really got in to the sound Quality thing and Bass is very important BUT just as anything to much is not good! So When I did the System in the SS I wanted good sound but Loud when I wanted it to be. Just the right mix. 10 speakers later I am verry happy

Wow - very nice install Redcar Guy... Just added a PG sub and amp to my P5, a daily driver. It almost feels like too much bass for the car, but without the $ to add an additional amp to push the infinity kappa speakers it will have to do...

I love this guy, always does the coolest things to cars. You wanna build me a subwoofer box like that dan :) . What cooler of a father could a 16 year old ask for. Don't stop amazing us Dan!

(IMO) Bass is good, but too much just ruins the sound. Yes it can sound impressive but distorts the enjoyment of music. It is like a very very firm suspension setup on a daily driver – initially very impressive but tiring after a while

Great work though, I cannot even hammer to bits of wood together

My son's a pretty sensible kid, but I agree that too much bass is a bad thing. I really think we are facing a generation of "hearing impaired" young adults from the current big boom sound systems. Since my son is only 15 and only has a learner's permit, I'm with him whenever he drives his Prelude. When the opportunity presented itself several times and an emergency vehicle with a siren went by, I had him roll up the windows and turn up the radio, base and all, until we couldn't hear the siren anymore, then back it off till the siren was pretty noticable. Because the volume control is pretty "notchy", he knows how many clicks are acceptable as far as I'm concerned. All I can do is hope that this practice carries over when he's on his own.We can only point 'em in the right direction I guess.
