Anyone experienced with using Ozone generators to eliminate odors ?

I have a car that was a previous smoker. I've gone so far as to remove the carpet and soap and water wash it, clean the entire interior adn leather multiple times with multiple products, use Ozium, mist an industrial formula from Ron's company onto any/every surface I could spray, and use a commercial A/C evaporator/vent treatment in the evaporator and vents. I think that at this point, the odor must be coming from areas like way up under the dash where I can't reach and maybe absorded into surfaces where it just doesn't want to come out. It worst on hot days after the car bakes in the sun.

I've heard of detailers using Ozone generators to "fog" a car for an hour or so and reach every little cranny. I have a feeling that's what I need.

Thoughts ?

I have seen one of these things operate. It was used by a friend that did a lot of auto re conditioning. He got a real bad smoker's car (cigars?) and the odor was overwhelming. He put this thing (small box) inside the car overnight and closed everything up. THe next morning they let the car air out for a couple of hours and it did erase nearly all smoke odor. I was pretty surprised.

I do not know who made it but I suspect the device was $300 or something like that. This is not the sort of device you would purchase to use once.

Maybe you can locate someone in you area that has one.

See the "car smell" post and look for my posting using Atmosklear and check out their website. It does sound like you may need a fogging of Atmosklear to get deep into the foam padding of the seats, headliner, etc. The stuff works wonders!

Hi, I'm new.

I've got an Ozone-thingie at home...does great job removing particulates. Sharper Image makes these for cars (sits on dash, cigarette lighter powered), although I've not acutally encountered a real live one. They go for $60 via their catalog or sharperimage.com. Less on E-bay!

Ciao. Ken

Actually, I believe the technology behind Sharper Image's product is Ion's. Two small metal bars Negatively charge the air, then it get's pulled toward the front, positively charged bars, the air lose's it's charge (not a static cleaner or anything) along with any of the more common air contaminates. In fact many a doctor/nurse I know have reccomended that people building a new house with a baby, or one on the way - get one of their filters, because all the new stuff in your house has chemicals. From sealents, glues, cleaners, wood, sawdust, new insulation, and that's just the beginning. Just like the new car scent is actually bad for you (because of chemicals diffusing from the fabrics/plastics) a new house is much worse for you.

Now, I may not be right, I know sharper image makes those things for plugin/nightlight and larger ones for rooms. But they ALSO make an ozone generator, but I haven't seen one for the car. I've seen ozone generators for Shoes and a closet version, but not a car version.

It makes sense, but I doubt Sharper image's is any better for 60 vs the pro edition for 300. The sharper Image's likely doesnt make enough to truly reach all of the parts of the car.

Plus, you've probably heard of oxidization, Ozone(O3) is several times worse than oxygen, as it has the composition of 3 Oxygen atoms, vs normal breating oxygen(O2) which is a much more stable molecule. Ozone actually Wants to ozidize with materials, while oxygen will only do so if the conditions are right.

In other words don't make it a nightly habit or anything, I doubt the next day your car is going to be rusted out and undrivable, but loose ozone may oxidize your paint. Plus Ozone is inhealthy to breate (is a component of LA's SMOG), so make sure your car airs out a few minutes before driving it.

Hope you get that smell out!

Mike

What I might suggest is to go to Sharper Image's website, then to their "auctions". Incredible deals, especially on their flash auctions. I bought their $100 closet ionizer for $25 or something, brand new. Just toss that thing in your back seat and roll up your windows.

Silk Cut cigarettes, a pack a day; I should know how to remove those damn odors!

Havent posted on this forum for awhile...

The owner brought this to me just a few hours after collecting it (89 miles on clock) and left it with me for a few days. As much as he wanted to enjoy the car he thought it would be best to get it detailed from the start and get some protection film applied, after I finished it was collected from my workshop to go to Peterborough for a few days to get the boys from PaintShield to do their stuff

On to the detail.

Wheels cleaned with P21S wheel gel
