Newbie's First Crack at Black

Looking for opinions from anyone who's used this three-step process. And is it possible to get it in sizes less than one gallon?

I haven't tried it yet but the only way to purchase it is by the gallon. You can try to hook up with another person in your area to split the cost . . . that works with a lot of different products. :up cheaper in numbers ;)

Well after practicing on my truck (silver ram 2500 4x4 CUMMINS \m/) a couple times and getting pretty nice results, I figured I would test myself over x-mas break.

My girlfriend has a black 09 Jetta TDI and graciously allowed me to try my luck with it. The paint didn't look great when she got it new (of course), and it continued to worsen because the techs at the VW service dept. feel compelled to scour the paint with dirty rags and call it a wash despite requests not to do so. The last straw came when she parked next to a wild sprinkler head that resulted in the worst water spots in history. By the time I saw them, they were not budging :cursing:. I swore as soon as we got our break from med school, I would try to get her paint looking like it should.

I settled on Meguiar's Ultimate Compound on thumb primed (thanks Kevin Brown and Todd Helme) 6.5 inch orange CCS OEM pads with my Griot's DA.
After comparing the results of this combo with the same polish but a white CCS OEM pad and Menzerna Intensive Polish with the orange pad, neither offered as much correction.

About midway through the job, I was informed that she was getting an oil change at the dealer the next morning at 9 . So much for taking my time and making it a 2 day job. I worked feverishly in the garage using a bright LED work light to assess my progress.

I now understand what you guys mean when you say "micromarring". With the light at the correct angle, I could see very tiny scratches in the pattern of the buffer's motion. Since it's a daily driver, and I was a little pressed for time, I figured it'll do for now. I'll probably be messing with it again during summer break. The light also showed that I didn't completely remove the etching of the water spots. When I examined very closely, it looked like the Nazca lines.

I wiped the last of the Autoglym HD off at 1:20 AM and took one pic.

I emphatically gave her instructions to make it clear that the car is not to be touched. She told them that she paid big for a paint correction , and that she would give the dealer all 0's on the post service survey if they "wash" it.

It returned unscathed, and I got the best pics I could with the sun playing hide and seek.

You can still see the water by the wheels. She felt compelled to take care of the rest of the car since I spent 11 hours on it the night before .

Without all of the wonderful info I have learned from this forum I may have done more harm than good. With that in mind I thank you, and probably more so, my girlfriend thanks you :notworthy:.

Nice job AJ! They say black is the detailer's doctorate thesis and it looks like you got high marks my friend.

Additional best of luck in med school. Are you guys at USF?

Thank you all so much. It was pretty rewarding to see it turn out that nicely.

We are actually at LECOM in Bradenton. We chose it because it's a PBL (Problem Based Learning) program. School resumes Monday so I should probably get cracking on the 150 pages of required pharmacology reading we were given at the beginning of break.:scared:

Good Job...Black is beautiful when it washed correctly and out of the hands of dealerships. I never let the BMW guys wash my car ever after a service call.

What you have there is a dazzling finish where no one but you will notice any water spots or marring. My guinea pig some years ago was a GFs black car as well.

I've learned since then that 5.5" pads work better for DA correction, PFW & M105 took care of the water spots and M205/white took care of the marring. On my 2nd attempt I went the extra mile and used 85RD long and slow for an incredible finish.

She was so happy she felt compelled to go show friends. Who lived on a dirt road. After two days of heavy rain. ~X(:cursing::doh::banghead::eek:

I never touched the car again.

My new GF has a white car.

The Dr. is in the house!!!!!!!!!!

Nice job AJ. If you learn medicine as quick as you picked up detailing, you will have no problem with Med School.

Awesome work, and good luck with school.:Dancing Dot:

Thank you. Without a doubt, it will be made clear from now on that the paint is off limits. I just hope my washing technique is good enough for black.

HAHA! I can already tell that this finish will be a constant struggle. The search continues for a place to park in our apartment complex that is away from the wrath of the evil sprinklers. I went out today to find more spots on the hood. While attempting to QD them off with a micro, I induced marring that's noticeable in the sun ~X(. Might need to find some softer micros for this car.:-? Any Suggestions?

Like you said, I'm really the only one that will notice, but I'll feel better after some extra work on the hood and roof. All of this reminds me how nice it is to have a silver truck.

I was tearing my hair out on a soft black finish on a motorcycle regardless of MF. I've been having the best luck and least marring using Little Blue Waffle Weaves and FK425 for QDing.

Sounds good. I'll try that. I'll just tell the GF that I have to buy more detailing stuff...and it's for her car's special needs. ;)
Hey Doc (that will be your new name now)...three words...THAT BE PURDY!

Bill

Haha, I'll take it! Thank you!

I know what you mean with the MF marring. My wife drives the exact same car. Black '09 Jetta TDI? Yeah, I can't find anything that won't leave marks. Talk about frustrating. Oh well, I guess that means plenty of time to practice... You'll have to post if you have any luck with a particular MF.
