Newbie with pad questions

I was cleaning my front windshield when I decided to clean the wiper blades. I was using EO 20/20 and it left BLACK streaks all over the cloth. The streaks looked really black not like dirt and grime almost like if the alcohol in the 20/20 was taking the coloring off the blades? Should I just use water next time?
 
It is most likely "dead" or oxidized rubber from the blades. You can clean this off of trim with isopropyl "rubbing" alcohol, which just happens to be the primary ingredient in most glass cleaners :). Don't get it on your paint . . . it strips wax / sealants.



You might not need to use alcohol next time if you cleaned it properly this time.

The black gook is dead rubber that needs to be cleaned off. I use an older MF & ISA or glass cleaner everytime I wash to ensure long lasting wiper blades.!!!
 
I use Autoglym Glass Polish to clean both glass and wiper blades (works very well), as recommended by Autoglym, so it is possible to use some cleaners, but check the label first. I would stay away from plastic or rubber cleaners unless they say it is safe.

I have had a Porter Cable for a couple of years now but have not even had it out of the box yet. I'm confused over which pads to get, how many to get and where to buy them. I'm sure it's very simple once i get pointed in the right direction, so I'm hoping for some advice, please.

Of course, once I get this sorted out I will be onto you guys about polishes and waxes so if you want to skip that step, any more help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you...

I personally like the 5.5" 7/8" thick LC Hydrotech pads.

As for polishes, get Meguiars M105 and M205 for now and see how that goes. If you have any other questions, please feel free to ask.

Welcome to the forum!

Congrats on the PC.

For most general duty polishing applications (with Dual Action Random Orbital Polisher such as the PC) I would recommend using 5.5 inch diameter pads on a 5 inch backing plate.

Here is a link to the backing plate at Proper Auto Care.

When we talk about 5.5 inch pad diameters, PAC offers 3 main choices. The Classic Flat Pads, the CCS Classic Pads, and the Hydro-Tech pads. Here is the main page for Dual Action Polisher Pads and Accessories.

Both the Flat and CCS pads use Lake Countries 'normal foam range' (ranging from heavy cut-yellow all they way down to a no-cut gold), with the primary difference being the design on the face of the pad.

The Hydro Tech pads use a newer 'closed' cell foam technology and a flat face. They are also available in a shorter (7/8 inch thick) version that will allow your Porter Cable to work to it's fullest potential.

With they Hydro-Tech pads, you can start with this PICK 3 KIT for great savings, and grab one in each color. Blue for heavy polishing, Tangerine for medium polishing, and Crimson for light polishing and/or wax application. While its best to start with at least 2 of each color, this will get you moving in the right direction towards a high gloss, swirl free finish. Don't forget to add the 5 inch backing plate and use Proper Auto Care's 10% off coupon that is for members of this forum (see my signature below the post).

Also this thread may help answer some questions about all of the foam colors offered by Lake Country.

So, I'm going to use the orange or blue pad with the M105 depending on the condition of the paint. Then I would go to the red pad with the M205, correct?

What about applying a wax after that? Do I use the red pad to apply the wax or do I need to use a white(?) pad for that?

And, last but not least, is removal of the wax done by hand?

Sorry to bug you guys with this, but obviously I don't want to screw something up...

If you are going to use the Hydrotech pads, you would use either the Cayan (Blue) or the Tangerine (Orange). Always start with the least aggressive method first and check your results. If you start with the Cayan, you can finish with M205 on the Tangerine. The Tangerine finishes down really well. You can then follow with a either M205 on a Crimson (Red), or something like Menzerna PO85RD on the Crimson. It all depends on the color and the condition of the paint, and what level you are looking for.

I wouldn't use the crimson to apply a wax or sealant. Use the LC Classic Flat Red for the LSP.
