Ok so I've had my wrx for over a year now and it needs help. I never really understood detailing and now i'm starting to get into it and it's got me kind of confused. for some reason I can get the car to 285whp but i can't pick out a good product for removing swirls.

also I've made some real bad mistakes in the past with washing/drying so i have many a swirl mark!

here's my plan of attack so far. I haven't bought anything yet so it can definately be tweaked.

1) wash with meguiers gold class w/wool wash mit and dry with WWMF from pakshak

2) clay bar w/magic clay perfect finish kit

3) ??? was thinking about getting a PC and using meguiers #83 w/orange pad

4) ???? was thinking about using meguiers #82 w/white pad

5) meguiers gold class wax (since i already have it)

can someone please recommend me a system to remove my swirls, i think they are pretty bad, you can see them in almost any light and angle :(

also howlong between waxing should I go? what kind of treatment should I give the car on a weekly basis besides washing?

i'm definately a n00b. :wavey

Hey!

I just finished my wifes 2001 Lexus black IS300 with many many swirls and scratches and it turned out awesome!

Here's what i used;

Washed with Dawn dish soap

Clay bared ( Zaino)

Washed with Zaino car wash

Polish with Menzerna IP x2 with orange pad on PC at 5-6

Polish with Menzerna FP x2 with white pad on PC at 4

Washed with Zaino car wash

2 coats of Zaino Z5 ( spray with Zaino Z6 in between coats)

1 coat of Zaino Z2

I definately recommend the Menzerna polishes!

You could try:

Wash with Dawn

Clay bar

Polish with Menzerna IP then Menzerna FP

Wash

Meg. Gold class wax x2

Good Luck!

blackmagicwrx - Welcome to Autopia! Until quite recently, I had a WRX. Mine was silver, but the clearcoat is probably the same.

You won't go wrong with polishes from Menzerna, Meguiar's, Poorboy's, 3M, or 1Z.

Everyone has their favorites...mine are 3M and 1Z. I just find them easier to use than most others and they do the job for me. Menzerna seems OK, but I've only used their Final Polish.

Plenty of people are happy with DACP and SFP, but I find them tricky to get great results with. It's just a personal preference thing, though. Still, on a black car, *I* would use something else, at least when you're just starting out.

If you want to use your GC, I'd use either Menzerna (Intensive and Final polishes) or 3M Perfect-it III polishes (RC 05933 and MG 05937). Cutting pad first, then polishing pad, both with the more aggressive of your products. Then polishing pad with the milder product. Then the GC.

thanks for the input, i've been reading some good things about the menzerna polishes, maybe i'll give them a try.

most of the paint problems i have are either swirls or random finger nail scratches around the door handles. keyless entry is a beautiful thing! the key never gets near any paint .hehe

Yep on the keyless entry! Note that the Subie clear is sorta hard (not Audi or Mazda-hard, but not exactly soft either). Be sure to use both grades of polish, you'll need the aggressive stuff.

i had a black 02 WRX and it was a pain to keep those swirls controlled. I used 3m SMR for black cars, AIO/SG and sometimes I would top it with #26. 3M would remove plenty of swirls, #26 or NXT would hide the rest preaty good too. Try and not quick detail that car because it gets swirld too easilly. Also, IMO, I think that the wool wash sponge caused swirls in my car. Also I think that the most swirls get created when driying the car.

Although I have not used any wool wash mitts, I would advise against using it or any wool products for that matter including machine cutting pads. It's just too harsh for today's soft but really lustrey paints

My old man is getting a brand new WRC blue WRX STI sedan in a week and I will be in charge of it's care since the 01 WRX (Red) was not looked after that well and not stored in a garage very often

I like Lamm's post - 3M SMR and the Menzerna are two great products.

My best tip would be to wash it with the best water you can get, preferably filtered water but if you wish, add a tiny bit of wax free shampoo to it. Shampoo with the softest sponge/ wash product you can get your hands on

If the body has any fallout on it (little red dots) then wash with a fallout removing wash (gel or liquid) or clay it with clay magic

Swirl mark remove by hand with 3M SMR or Meguiars Pro Swirl Remover - I have both in my collection

Top Quality sealant - I use Omikron Bodyseal which is bloody smooth and soft and makes paint incredibly smooth but it's not available in the US.

Klasse and the other sealants regularly talked about on here would be perfect.

Give the paint a couple hours at least to cure and then finish off with a synthetic wax such as 3M Premium Liquid Wax or simply a paste or liquid carnuba

Lately I've used 3M Wax then topped with Pacer Rocket carnuba wax (liquid) and then Malco Flash which has teflon in it for a supremely ultra smooth finish. That's all that teflon does.

If you've got any marks you want to hide for a static display or car show, apply a hand glaze such as 3M IHG, Farecla Black Top or Malco Plum Crazy

All the best
