Newbie - SSR question on new car

scooch

PC @ 6 = Ludicrous speed
Just bought an STI in WRB a bit ago and have been reading posts about SSR2.5 and SSR1 combination. I have a few scratches from driving on the highway :( but most of it is minor marring. I will be applying SSRs by hand...i know a lot of you highly suggest using a PC...and I was wondering if SSR2.5 is too aggressive or not really needed? Could I apply SSR1 first and see how that looks and then apply SSR2.5 if I do not see any change? I have also read using a terry cloth towel is probably the best way to apply SSRs by hand...has anyone tried to use a MF?

Start with SSR1 and use medium pressure with your hand. It may take 2-3 trys before going to SSR2.5. A MF cloth is OK, but IMO you'll get more bite with a terry cloth. You could do 1 pass as extra pass with a MF to clean up any marring from the terry cloth. Remember to alway start with the least agressive polish first. I also recomend to check if the car needs claying. When a new car is shipped it gets lots of contamination from the shipping process, so rub that ziplock over the top to see if it needs a claying before you wax/polish for the first time.

Thanks jetskie going to get some SSRs and terry cloth towels. I have already used some Pinnacle clay on the car a couple of weeks ago and liked the results. Trying to get some time this week to do a full detail....wash, clay, SSRs, AIO/SG.....my arm is going to be sore!

someone posted some pictures of how SSR 2.5 removed some marring on his car but i can't seem to find it. i believe this member used a PC to remove the marring.

you could try SSR 1 first, but i think you'll be disappointed as i find it is better at removing the light hazing SSR 2.5 sometimes leaves behind, rather than at removing scratches. and this is with a PC. so by hand, like i said, you could try SSR 1 first and see what it can do. most likely i think you'll end up using the SSR 2.5 with a terry cloth, and then SSR 1 if needed.

you might also want to check out this post which is also about using SSR by hand.

happy detailing. :wavey

Thanks for the advice hirosh. I read that post earlier when searching around and found it to be useful. I think I will try SSR1 just to see how it works, since I have never used it, and then maybe move onto SSR2.5.

yeah, if you haven't heard this advise already, start off with the least aggressive polish as possible.

also you might want to search for some of Scottwax's old posts. before he got his PC, he did everything by hand, and he did some awesome work. i remember one post where he removed some scratches from a mercedes benz SUV all by hand! i forgot what he used though.

so it is possibly to do it by hand, i've tried it before getting my PC. i just hope you have some strong arms! ;)

good luck!
