Newbie! Help!

I'm looking at buying a Porter Cable from AutoGeek.net sometime this week, but I have no clue where to start! I was going to start with this: http://www.autogeek.net/hk7424.html but I didn't know if I should invest in any more pads or if I needed any more materials for my first Porter Cable experience.

Also, I'm looking for a good swirl remover. Nissan's clear coat is kinda thin on the 350z, but I have swirls to hell and back since I bought the car used. They are pretty light swirls, but they're killing me. Help!

I just need someone's help getting me started! :waxing:

I'll be topping off whatever swirl remover with Zaino products that I've already been using. The Z-2 just isn't doing it for my swirls though. :buffing:

Invest in as many pads as your wallet allows.

Click the link in my sig for the Autopia Guide to Detailing.

BTW, :welcome

I agree with Mongoose. I just purchased the porter cable kit from autogeek and now realize that I need more pads. Buy as many as you can afford. Possibly 5 of each is what I want now.

As far as swirl removers I like the Poorboys line, SSR 1,2,2.5 because they are very user/beginner friendly. I also like Meguiars #80 for light swirls and #83 for more serious swirls and scratches.

Hope that helps!

Just started using my PC recently as well. I purchased the PC from Lowes (not taking anything away from Autogeek, I just wanted somewhat instant gratification).

Ordered a backing plate/pad "sampler" set from Exceldetail.com, and then ordered 1 extra of almost each pad from Excel, so I now have two each of Blue, Green, Orange, and Yellow pads. I chose two of each of those because they are polishing pads, and I went with SSR1 and SSR2.5. So, I have one polishing pad for each product for each grade of pad. I have one finishing pad, because I only plan on using it for one product (if even that). I plan on using a blue pad for AIO application, and the finishing (black) pad for UPP. I may put the UPP on by hand, then I can use the black pad for a second layer of AIO.

Moral of the story: what everyone else said.......get more than you think you'll need. Its a heckuva lot better than getting one of each, and having to wash between product uses (since I was a newbie, I couldnt look at my swirls and say "Ill need to go right to SSR2.5", so I tried SSR1 first, and when it didnt work I had clean pads ready to go with SSR2.5).

I'm going to go and purchase the PC tomorrow at Lowes and the exceldetail.com pads. I'll go with the backing plate/pad sampler set and 1 extra of every pad, probably 2 extra gray pads.

So should I go with the SSR products or Meguires. Which do you guys prefer?

Both are good. For Meg's I use DACP (#83) and #80, and for Poorboy's I use SSR2.5 and SSR1. Some have problems using #83, and the PB's line of SSR's can be used in the sun if needed.

There are a lot of good polishes out there, but the SSR's seem to be very popular around here right now, and since they're easy to use and "sun friendly" they would be a good choice.
