Mr. Clean

The Man Who Knows The Man
Got any? Food? Football games? etc.

This struck me as I munched on an early bowl of black-eyed peas that Mrs. Clean had prepared. Black-eyed peas is a staple food around here, but especially for New Years Day. The recipe changes slightly, but basically, 1) 10-16 oz. pkg of dried peas, 2) @ 1 lb. of ham steak, 3) 8 or so strips of bacon, fried crisp 4) can of Rotel - hot variety, 5) 1 medium onion sauteed, 6) several cloves of garlic.

And then how about some turnip greens and homemade cornbread? Mmmm-mmmm good. Don't know if it will bring good luck and prosperity, but I'll be well fed.

I've know people who came from he midwest who don't (won't) eat black-eyed peas. The considered them livestock feed. I've also known people who consider sauerkraut and beef short ribs to be their lucky New Years Day meal.

Martenelli's sparkling cider, jumbo shrimp over ice with a blended shrimp cocktail sauce, and king crab legs with drawn butter are the New Year's eve staples at our house. We've done a few awesome prime rib's over the years but always come back to the crab for the main course. ;)

We just had some sauted sea scallops, rice pilaf, and green peas for dinner.

Today, we will have Hoppin John (blackeyed peas).

Shrimp, King Crab, Scallops mmmmmm that sounds tasty! Love the seafood!

Bunky, what do you add to the black-eyed peas besides rice for your Hoppin' John?

onions, garlic, rice, ham bits, black eyed peas, pinch of allspice, shot of tabasco.

Ibis, you are correct jalepenos, and I'll submit Rotel, are welcomed additons to just about any dish.

Bunky, that sounds good, though I don't think I'm familiar with the flavor of Allspice.

Last night, or was it this morning?, we were discussing the nuances of the various brands/forumulations of Tabasco sauce ie. the McIlhenny Company vs the various other LA offerings.

Deviled eggs! YES! Only seem to get to enjoy those once a year on Christmas Eve - don't know why we don't do these more often --

Collard, mustard, turnip, love them all!

I made it today. Allspice is a Jamaican spice that is similar to cloves, nutmeg. etc. Actually, I did not have Tabasco so I used another hot sauce -- something like Texas Pete so smokey taste (not as hot).

We also had cornbread.
