OK, my wife sezs I am too picky, so u tell me.

Got new tires put on by a local shop, owner seems like a good, honest guy. He was a service manager for local BMW dealership for 15 years.

When they put on the tires, they left me with these scratches on each rim. Would you complain, or am I over-reacting??:nixweiss

You should DEFINITELY complain. If the shop owner is a decent guy, he'll make it right.

Incidentally, the guy that worked on your car must have noticed what happened when he did the first wheel. The fact that he continued and damaged all four wheels is inexcusable.

Do you honestly think that because it's a BMW that some guy at a tire shop is gonna care and slow down? Come on. It sucks, but have you ever been to Discount Tire or some comparable place on a Saturday and seen all the people that come in there? They don't have time to treat one car differently than the next. I understand this was a local shop and perhaps smaller, but I think the mentality is obviously the same. For me that issue would be time it takes and what I think they would actually do vs. discomfort of living with some little scratches. Personal choice, and I guess if I could afford a BMW, I'd be pissed too...

I wouldn't think it would be alright to damage someone's wheels when installing tires, whether it be a BMW, Mazda, or Ford Pinto. I've had tires installed at several different places without scratches to the rims.

Is it also ok to get grease stains on the carpets when in for routine maintenance, as long as it's quick?

You're right. I bought it with 12k miles for $37,000.

But still a lot of money..............

And the wheels still cost $500, probably more. It will cost $200 or more to have them refinished.

The scratches lowered the value of the wheels. So no, this is not acceptable. But it is very common.

If you look around you will be able to find a tire dealer who can mount the tires without scratching the rims. I think they use plastic covered tools. Just make it really clear that you expect no scratches before they mount the tires.

I worked for seven years at a tire shop; scratches like that are simply the result of carelessness. Theres no reason to damage a wheel with proper prcedure and equipment.

I would say something. I go through rims like underwear. I always question "touchless" mounting before I commit. Looks like they slipped or were just careless. The owner/manager will make it right if they are halfway decent.

I would use David's rim repair article from www.bettercarcare.com . My friend did it on his Audi wheels with very good success.

:hm: You only change your underwear with the new season?

:p

I'd complain. No doubt about it, they installed a defect in the wheel that wasn't there before. I'd complain. Damn skippy.

please complain. i got firestone tires put on my motegi rims (decent tires, cheap rims) they scratched one of them up bad around the edge (painted gunmetal). so they offered to replace it for free. so i went there 2 days later and waited for the replacement, they took the tire off the damaged rim and went to put it on the new rim they had ordered for me...only to find that the rim had a flat spot on it, like someone had dropped it....so, i was pissed, had to wait another day and they fixed it for me. they also gave me a free alignment for my trouble.

my stuff was way cheaper than yours and i got it fixed right. go complain!

I called the guy, going to see him tomorrow. He said he bought (and they used) a special machine for putting tires on rims w/o touching the tire. So we will see......................
