New M105/M205 tag team on a GMC 2500HD

RaskyR1

Rasky's Auto Detailing
I did this vehicle a little while back, but since I'm still new to Autopia I thought I'd share some of my work... ;)

BIG TRUCK!

I only had 6-8 inches of room to spare getting this truck in the shop...really made working on the front and back difficult.

Products and tool used:

-Gold Class car soap

-APC

-APC+

-Wheel Brightner

-Hot Rims Chrome polish

-Hyper Dressing

-M40

-Meguiars Glass Cleaner

-PlastX

-Last Touch

-Mild Clay

-Folex

-LGM

-Various brushes

-New DA approved M105 on the rotary with a wool pad

-M205 on the rotary with a foam polishing pad

-M205 on the FLEX 3401 with a finishing pad

-Wolf Gang DGPS 3.0

It was dark when the truck showed up and I didn't want to let all the heat out of the shop just to take before pics. Prior to washing, the truck was cover in lots of dirt and salt...

I was pretty rushed on time, so pics are not the best.

Before

All taped up

Lots of swirls and RIDS, several were to deep to be removed

Tops had some tree sap, a few had etched and stained the clear

Some afters

The damp looking spot on the carpet was from an air freshener that I had just sprayed. ;)

Thanks for looking!

you said you used the DA approved 105 with the rotary. why didn't you use it with a DA, or use the regular 105 with the rotary? or did you have a typo. just wondering if there is a difference

The new DA approved version has a little longer working time than the none DA approved stuff. Just because it's approved for DA use doesn't mean it can't be used with a rotary. ;)

This was also my first vehicle with the new M105 and I was eager to try it out, and given the size, a DA would have taken much longer.

Thanks again. ;)

I actually open the door and stand on the step plates inside. I will lean slightly with my back/side against the door standing close to the side with the hinges. I will also stand in the box to get the back portion of the roof.

Make sense?

Lets just say it's not my favorite area of the vehicle to polish. :D

what you should do is rig up some system that lets you hang mission impossible status from the roof. that would be so pimp.

looks pretty dang sick. im sure he was really happy when he got it, but pissed when he got home and realized what the snow did to it. haha:D

Yeah, detailing in MN wnters sucks. I feel bad some times but it will still look good when they wash it again. The owner gave me a large tip on this truck so I provided him with a little wash kit (Megs GC, WW MF towels, Grit guard) as well as a write up on using them. ;)

First off nice work Rasky, second off you guys are really taking chances standing on those things while you polish the roofs....:nervous2:

Just go to Lowes or HD and buy a 20' platform, they are perfect for SUV's, trucks and tall cars and they're only like $40 bucks.:bigups

don't you think a 20 Foot platform is a little big?

I just don't think I want them taking up room in the shop and I would be worried about it bumping into the side of the vehicle.

I'm curious though Josh why you think I'm taking chances with my process? Maybe it didn't relay exactly what I do well enough?

Do you have a pic of the platform you recommend?

Just to clarify, in the image below you can see where I lean my body in the door jamb. I have my feet planted on the step plate of the door jamb. The amount of body weight against the door is minimal, but it's enough to ensure my footing.

I guess I've never questioned this method as it was tought to me back in 1992, and I haven't had any issues yet. I do always welcome and encourage advice if one feels can improve my process in any way. ;)

Nice work.

Why the Meguiars Online mark in the photos, do you work for Meguiars?

LOL, no. Most of my posting is over on MOL and I load my pics there. It automatically water marks them. ;)

Rasky,

I use a platform similar to this one.

Aluminum Mini-working 3-foot Platform from Overstock.com

(There are several different models out there, so check the size when comparing. The example above was just a result of a google search)

They fold up for storage and I usually rig up some sort of pad to protect the vehicle if it ever does bump the truck. :nervous:

Mine was a gift from my wife and I think she got it from Fleet Farm or Northern Tool. Menards, HD, etc. should have something similar, also. Being kind of short, I use it a lot on trucks and SUV's.

Yea I have a 3 step a 4 step and a 10' ladder on hand at all times to tackle the roofs of taller vehicles. And as far as trucks goes since I tend to work top to bottom I just hop in the bed and start on the roof. makes it real easy. Then the 4 step ladder for the very front that I can't reach from the bed. But I say if you have a method that works well for you no need to change it.

I use a little platform I bought from HD on those tall friggin trucks and SUV's. Works great and it folds up neatly. Also, makes a handy seat to take a break when you're doing something that big.

Great job on that monster, and nice of you to give the wash kit to the customer, really shows you care. I might steal that idea on a few of my regulars.
