New guy w/ Poorboy SSR question

Have a light silver metallic paint. Car is 4 yrs old and has been waxed every year and washed weekly. I want to clean it up and remove scratches and even out the paint and make it have a unoxidized uniformed paint shine. It has swirl marks, should I use Poorboy's SSR1 (light abrasive) or SS2 (medium abrasive). I have a PC 7424, which pad and which SSR. Thankyou for your help in advance!

Andrew

If you haven't already done so, CLAY first, then clean the paint with AIO or similar.

Then start on the swirls/scratches with the less agressive SSR1 on a test area. If that works, great!! If not, step up to the SSR2.

I would use a "polishing pad" (sorry, don't know what line you have - so I can't be more specific than that).

Then I would follow with the lesser aggressive SSR1 or PB PwC to polish it out and bring out the shine.

Norah

PS - It'll cool down soon - at least by Hallowe'en!!

AZ Ferrari,

It sounds like your swirls are fairly noticeable. If they are, I would recommend starting with Poorboy's SSR2.5, or Meguiar's DACP and a "polishing pad". You might need to step up to a "cutting pad", but I would give the polishing pad a start first. Once you have the swirls fairly well cleaned up, use a polishing pad or finishing pad with a product like SSR1, Meguiar's #9, or Menzera FP to remove any hazing, clean up any remaining light swirls, and add some gloss.

Just my 2 cents.

Norahcrv, I thought that the SSR would be the cleaner and swirl remover? I use the Properautocare.com line of pads. So I should
1. Wash car w/ dawn
2. Clay bar the car with soapandwater solution
3. SSR 2 (from what both Boss and you said this should be median) w/ white polishing pad.
4. wash car again with Zaino Z-7 car wash
4. Zaino Z-2 with ZFX for three coats?

Am I missing a step? Boss, does SSR 2 leave a residue requiring another product to remove it? Let me know of this process is good.

Great advice from Boss. On the LC pads, use the white first, see how it works for you, go to the yellow if you need something more agressive. SSR1 or FPII is recommended just to bring out the maximum gloss.

Good choice using PB's SSR's with Zaino because, like the Menzerna polishes, they do not contain fillers like many other polishes.

You might want to consider using SSR2.5 if the swirls are heavy, maybe someone with more experience of using SSR's could advise you?

As a Zaino user myself, just one word of advice: make sure you have the swirls gone before you apply Zaino, as Zaino does very little to hide them.

Good luck!

AZ,

I think your steps are pretty good. Although, you probably don't need the Dawn wash. However, if you only do it once a year or so, it shouldn't hurt, but don't make a habit of using Dawn for washing.

Again, if the swirls are pretty bad, I would recommend SSR2.5, and not SSR2, or work the SSR2 multiple times if you need too to remove the swirls. If your intent is to follow the Zaino system to the letter and continue layering, you want the paint finish as "perfect" as you can get it before you start layering the Z2.

My understanding is that Poorboy's polishes do not leave anything behind. However, to be on the safe side, I think your wash with Z7, and a quick QD with Z6 just prior to applying the Z2 will insure a perfectly clean paint surface.

Thanks Boss, seems like in every one of your posts you are the one to listen too. A ? about the right microfiber to use I have Adams polishes microfiber cloths. They are made in the US and seem to have a normal matt to them, I recall you discussing the plush ones are not good for the final wipe. Let know.

AZ,

Well that's far from the truth. There are many, many, many knowledgeable people here at DC. A lot of them know much more than I do about this stuff. However, we all try to help. :D As you can see, Norah, and Redondo gave you the just about the same info that I did! :bigups

As for the MF towels........... If you have the new "yellow" Adam's towels, they are very nice, and should work well for removing LSP products.
