New black car - How many coats of PB Ex??

Hi,

I have a brand new Pontiac GP GXP and want to give it as much protection as I can. It's swirl free right now but I'm affraid it'll be a constant battle to keep it that way.

It didn't need clay so today I washed it and used AIO followed by 2 coats of Poorboys Ex. It looks great but would extra coats of Ex add extra protection?? (ie is Ex cumulative).

I have a can of Meguires #26 paste wax. How would that work on top of Ex??

you could try applying more coats, but you probably won't see much difference. not sure if with EX more coats = more protection, it might be negligible.

topping EX with a carnauba wax is usually good. i'm not sure how the #26 would do though. you could a small section, say of your hood, and see how you like it. or if you're willing to buy another wax, Natty's is quite good. pretty good durability, really nice with EX. if you want a durable wax, Meg's #16 is quite durable. not sure how it'd look on black. i think Collinite(sp?) also has a good durable wax.

good luck! :wavey

If you didn't wait 24 hours between your two coats of EX, the second coat was negligent but gives you peace of mind that you got 100% coverage.

EX is so easy to apply that I usually just throw a fresh coat on after every other wash, and it never really degrades. I actually apply it with the PC and a finishing pad, leave it on while I shine up the tires, clean the glass, etc. and then remove it.

You can top EX with #26 which will give you a little bit more of a wet look and maybe some depth, but it will only add a few weeks to a month of extra protection. Once the wax wears off you will be down to the EX again.

Play with it and see what you like better. Do a second coat of EX after your next wash, and then add a coat of #26 after another wash and compare. If you like the look of #26 better, then add a fresh coat every few weeks instead.

Regardless, if you add a layer of *something* at least every four weeks, you should stay VERY well protected. Have fun!

Good to see another Pontiac GP driver, I've got a '97 GTP in black too. What I'd do next really depends on what state you're in - if you live somewhere where it doesn't get rediculously hot in the summer, leave the EX as it is and layer #26 over it - I'd go for 2-3 coats of 26 and it'll look amazing. If temperatures go over 100 regularly where you live, try layering EX one more time for depth, then go with a single coat of #26. The 26 will melt off fairly regularly, so its not really worth layering it, IMHO. If you wax it monthly with 26, the EX should last atleast until the end of summer, at which point I'd AIO it again and start over from a fresh paint surface.

At that point, if you live where it doesn't snow, try the multiple 26 layers. If you live where it snows, go for several layers of EX, or if you want to try new products, Klasse SG topped with Collinite.
