Hello all, I am thinking about holding a seminar in my neighborhood to teach people on how to properly wash and maintain a vehicle. Now I do not consider myself a "professional" in anyway but I don't want to get into compounding/polishing paint so I think it should be okay. Simply washing, drying, waxing, interiors and such. I have some clients in the neighborhood whos cars I do but there are a lot that do it themselves. I want to help those people out....plus maybe make a buck or two on the side.

I was thinking about having pamphlets with products, where to buy them, and tools to use/and how to use them. Set up a canopy and have a car or two to demonstrate on and just teach them how to do it. Do you think people would pay $20 to come and learn how to take care of their vehicles properly or is this a lost cause? Let me know what you all think, thanks.
 
I would maintain their cars for them and pocket the money. If you show them or teach them , then they won't need your services in the future maybe, but then it does sounds like a good idea also. Good luck
 
Well I thought about that but there are just some people who enjoy and have the time to wash their cars. One of my clients call me every 6 months, the rest of the time he does it himself. Plus they have friends and will talk to them, the friends may want to come or have me do their cars, either way my name gets out.
 
i think that would be a great gesture on your part, but as zoomzoom mazda5 pointed out, they may decide to do the little things by themselves and that might cut into the costs of your services...
 
Then go for it and post on how it went and see if it works. Most of my neighbors don't wash their cars themselves so i get to do some of them for them. Hope it turns out great MobileJay.
 
I am going to think about it and see what I come up with. I think you guys may have a point though now that I think about it. Most of them say they will call and never do, but they will probably keep me in mind for one of these days. If I teach them, then like you all say, they will not call at all. I think its a great idea for getting to know the neighborhood and getting folks talking about you. Hard to organize and I would avoid teaching too much, but have products on hand(high end expensive kits to sell them. ) Then you could offer discounted hig end details and use their products insteaed of yours. Make them buy twels too, and dei water systems all from which you can profit from. Then you wont need your trailer when they call you for a wash or a detail. I know a detailer that makes alot of money doing this and is very busy.
