Need to get off light water spots and contaminants

I'm new here, so I'll just go ahead and state that up front.

I've got a 1997 Mustang GT, laser red in color. It has 103,000 miles on it but I have taken good care of it thru the years. To see the car you wouldn't believe it has that many miles. I do detail the motor and inside and regularly clean the underside. So please understand that all advice will be taken seriously and you won't be wasting your time on a "newbie"

On the top of my car I have some light water spots and maybe a little contamination. I have used a claybar and it didn't get rid of it. The more I look at it, it seems as if it's all water spot residue. But I'm not 100% positive. I use Zaino products on the car. I haven't used the swirl remover though.

My question, what would y'all use to get these imperfections off? I know Zaino has a swirl remover, as well as many other manufacturers. I don't have a PC, BUT after reading all the positive feedback I'm gonna buy one in the next couple of days. Any advice will be appreciated, I realize I'm gonna have to take all the Zaino off. Oh by the way, these spots are only on the trunk lid and top of the car. But if you think I would benefit greatly by going over the car completely with the product you advise let me know. Thanks in advance.

Hi, and welcome to Autopia! :welcome

It sounds like these spots might be water spot etching that has eaten through the Zaino at some point. Zaino's Z5 isn't going to remove much of anything as it isn't a "swirl remover". Try searching for "water spots" (or "waterspots") to find some threads about how to proceed with them depending on how bad it is.

Don't forget that the Learn! link above is very useful especially when combined with the Search feature. HTH and good luck!

Have you had any luck with a general use polish ? Ya need to start somewhere.....3M makes a med cut, oxidation remover:3M Perfect-Itâ„¢ II Rubbing Compound, many folks have had excellent results in using this product, I for one havent used it, I unfortunately learned the hard way....

And, after H20 spot removal, detail the whole car ! (not with the compound though) hehehe

Would a polish work for this? I have some 3M Fine cut rubbing compound. It does remove water spots, but, if I can use something less abrasive I would of course like to. Also, after reading enough articles yesterday to give me a headache, I went out and took a look at my car. Sure enough, there they were, swirl marks. I've read alot about VM, would this be a good product for both problems? I've got 3 car shows in the next 3 weeks, and I hate finishing second. So once again, thanks for any advice you can give me.

You should always try and do it the gentlest way first, as a general rule applicable to everything, but it's sometimes a judgement call depending on how bad the problem is. Try something milder first, and if that doesn't work in a reasonable amount of time step up to the Fine Cut you have. VM is probably too gentle for your needs.

What else do you have lying around (pre-cleaner, swirl remover, etc.). BTW, usually you could probably get rid of the water spots and swirls at the same time.

From what I've heard, VM and P21S GEPC (right?) are reasonably similar, so I wouldn't count on it working on anything but the lightest defects. In fact, they're some of the most gentle products discussed, short of non-abrasive stuff.

I've read alot about the Meg's swirl free polish, I'm planning on putting Zaino on after that, that will go on top of that okay won't it?
