Need suggestions for agressive OTC polish before AIO

I have a friend who's going to do his car 1st time by hand. I gave him 6 ozs of AIO to use but I'm thinking he will need a strong polish before the AIO that he can buy locally.

My idea was wash, clay, polish, AIO, wax. I've searched but can't think of a strong OTC polish that he could use. I was thinking maybe Megs Color-X might work, but it has polymers/wax in it and maybe the AIO wouldn't top out right and work like its supposed to.

Other idea was maybe the AIO would be good enough by itself and might be stronger than Color-X, but I'm not sure of AIO's polishing/defect removal ability. Any recommendations appreciated.

I recently did my new to me, previously neglected car with KIT Scratch Out and Meg's GC. It did wonders for the SS red. It's under click and brag if you wanna see what it did for me. It's called So I rubbe one out today.

I was at the local autobody/paint supply place last week and they still had 3M's PI-III RC (05933)/MG (05937) products on the shelf. Those are what I use before the Klasse twins, and they work OK by hand/PC.

IMO people oughta maybe expand their notion of "OTC" to include the counter at the local autobody/paint store :D Lot's of good stuff there, and they can order what they don't have in stock.

Jacksonville, FL is the largest city (by land mass) in the US. It's larger than LA and NYC combined. We have a total of one autobody supply/paint store, and I don't think we have any in any of the adjoining counties, either. If you want something other than Sherwin-Williams auto paint (PPG, Dupon, K-M...) you're SOL. Find a place that will UPS it because UPS ground is about the only way to get Haz-Mat anymore.

Thankfully, they have a paltry selection of Megs, but are quite willing to special order anything you want. I avoid the middle-man, and order from http://www.autodetailingsolutions.com/. In fact I have some 2K, 2.5K, and 3K uni-grit sandpaper on order from them, along with the K-2000 sanding block to take care of some paint chip repairs.

There are a couple of NAPA autoparts stores in the area that carry 3M products.

I've also seen the 3M products you discuss at Pep Boys. However, they were on the bottom shelf, and in thier usual dark bottles. Not exactly as easy to find as the bright red Mothers containers on the top (eye-level) shelf. Maybe Mother Pre-Wax cleaner, or Power Polish (MPP)? I suggested DACP in another thread, and was shot down by someone who said MPP was better. I did notice it was on the shelf at Pep Boys.

I personally haven't had good luck with Scratch-X. I've had much better experience with DACP and a cheapo 6" orbital with a terry bonnet. By cheapo, I mean the $15 one at Harbor Freight, the $20 Coleman model at Wal*mart, or the $20 Turtle Wax brand one I got at Home Depot (that I think has been discontinued). Yes, there is a PC in my future, but not today. The original poster may want to consider MPP + a cheap orbital if they don't want to spring for a PC ($109 at Lowe's, but you'll need backing plate, counterweight, and pads).

Then use the AIO as a glaze substitute and top with, say, spray Nanowax? :think2 Colonite Insulator wax has had good reviews here, too, or you could be conservative, and since you've gone with the first half of the "Klasse Twins," go with the other half - Klasse High Gloss Sealant Glaze.

I have AIO on order, too, btw.

I appreciate the suggestions. I'm going to suggest to him to clay first (he's up in Maryland) and I'm thinking maybe AIO itself would get the job done, but the Mothers & 3M sounds like they may be just the ticket. Great suggestions, any others welcomed.
