Need some advice on removing some heavy swirls with a PC

Hey guys. I've tried Griot's#2, and now today SSR 2.5 and both remove I'd say 70-80% of the swirls...but the deeper swirls and scratches remain and drive me nuts. I haven't gone as far as trying ssr3 or any of the polishes designed for heavier swirls - nor do I have a rotary buffer, but I figured before I make another purchase, I'd ask the forum for some recommendations on what to buy to use with my orange griot's polishing pad and random orbital.. Thanks in advance...

I'd try a 4" pad system. I haven't tried the PB's line, but the Griot's orange pad/Machine Polish #2 combo is *very* mild IMO (I found the MP#2 worked a lot better with a Cyclo BTW). The only way I do significant correction via PC is with 4" pads. They allow you to apply more pressure without the PC merely "jiggling".

How about using mp1 or ssr3 - some of the heavier duty polishes? Chris223 - I understand a rotary is the way to go for heavy swirls/scratches but that's just not in my arsenal yet. I was hoping I'd exhaust the possible polishes/pads that I could potentially use with the pc first before making that investment.. So how about ssr3, griot's mp1, or some of the other brands like optimum or menzerna?

The last forumulation of MP#1 that I tried (IIRC it was the third version Griot's has sold) wasn't all that aggressive by Griot's orange pad/PC either. Might work well with a 4" pad though. The best bang for the buck will be a small backing plate and some 4" pads. IMO it's a night-and-day difference compared to the 6.5" setup.

i would try Optimums Hyper Compound with a cutting pad on the PC. it has taken out some good defects for me on the PC

Thanks 03k20a2 - if anyone else has suggestions of products I could try with my current setup that would be great...not really looking to get too many more pads and backing plates if I don't have to, but may have to try the 4" route as Accumulator suggested, or potentially pony up for a rotary..

Also if I use optimum hyper compound, what product should I use to remove the hazing etc? Will ssr2.5 work or griots #2?

if you do have the money, a 4" plate/pad set is never a bad investment from what I hear.

Seems like quite a few recommendations for the 4" plate/pad set - I may have to do it. It's not a money issue, more a garage space issue...my cabinets and garage area are just getting too packed full of toys and toy-related products. In any case, I placed an order today to re-up on leather cleaner/conditioner, microfiber towels, and some of that souveran wax everyone seems to love so much, so I threw in a bottle of sr3 and optimum hyper compound to the order just to see how they will work with my random orbital. I did read that they recommend you use a rotary with the optimum hyper but I figured I'll give it a shot based on 03k20a2's recommendation. Knowing me I wont be able to resist very long if this doesn't work and will end up buying a rotary anyway, so it will come in handy at that point I guess if I don't have much success with the pc.

I am pleased to report that the ssr2.5 did work really well on my clear bra, which was as swirled as the paint. I also must comment that I am using it on black paint, that sat outside in the sun all day. The poorboys ssr2.5 worked as promised, not drying up and having a long working time despite the sun/heat of the paint. I was impressed.

I was able to get out some pretty heavy scratches with a PC on the roof of a Nissan---maroon color----using SSR2.5 and a 6.5 in. LC Orange lite cutting pad. It was about a 6" by 9" area---looked like someone dragged a briefcase over the paint. I wouldn't want to do a whole lot of areas that way, though.

The stuff I like to use has been discontinued and is getting hard to find, but it's 3M PI-III RC 05933 followed by PI-III MG 05937.

You might want to look into the Hi-Temp like at TOL. They have some aggressive products that will break down properly when used with the PC (as opposed to being rotary-only).
