Need HELP with new Jet Black Bimmer

Good morning... I'm new to Autopia. I've done some research on bimmerfest.com... they have instructed me to go to the experts... (that would be you :D ).

I have some minor etching that is either from water spots or (sigh) maybe clear coat damage from the salt spray in Germany last February. I picked up a 2005 Jet Black BMW 545.

I've been researching Klasse, Zaino, Menzerna products.

I'm reluctant to use a clay bar and also reluctant to use a wheel.

Any suggestions?

I've heard that Klasse and Menzerna are both hard to buff off by hand.

Thanks,

Spartacus_33 :up

Welcome to Autopia! :wavey

Nice car! Don't be reluctant to clay. You'll be surprised at what's 'stuck' on the paint :shocked Also, by 'wheel' I'm guessing you mean a random orbital polisher. Invest in one of those as soon as possible(around here we like the Porter Cable models). It's one of the most rewarding and safe investments in detailing you can make. Especially with a Jet Black car, you'll really need one!

As for products, Mezerna makes fine polishes. Easy to use and nice results! I'd stay away from the new Klasse products for now. Verdict's not in on durability yet. Mezerna will work if you choose to go the Zaino route. For maximum protection, you can't beat the Zaino system. I've been a delighted user for a couple years now.

I hope this helps!

You'll definitely want to get yourself a Porter Cable. They're safe to use and really help.

Menzerna makes some great stuff, but my new polish of choice is Optimum Polish.

PLEASE buy a PC and some clay...A novice can use both with great results! claybar is impossible to mess up if you just make sure you have enough lube. ;) same with the PC, It is nearly impossible to mess up paint with a little common sense! BELIEVE me you will not regret getting either and once you do use them you will wonder how you could have ever lived with out them!

Maybe you want to post in the right forum it would get better traffic

I posted here initially because it's entitled "Detailing Product discussion". Initially my post was in reference to what products would people recommend for Jet Black.

Any rules on this site for "double posting"? :nono

What other forum would you suggest?

BTW... I'm leaning more towards purchasing a Porter-Cable now, but am no closer to deciding between Zaino, or Klasse or Menzerna products. I've been at this now for about a week, very interesting...... I'm just being cautious. I would be so pi$$ed if I screwed up the paint on my new baby.

You wont screw it up with a pc, some common sense, and a polishing pad. Keep the pads off of head lights.

That said, you should clay, and i personally would buy UPP instead of the Menz.

But Zaino is really giving me excellent results right now, and it stays looking that way months after you apply it.

Zaino doesnt stain trim either. Not that the others do, but i try not to use any products that stain trim FWIW.

When you first join Autopia, you are given the title "Apprentice". You may be an experienced detailer already, but we like everyone to earn their stripes. Until you graduate from "Apprentice" to "Enthusiast", we would appreciate you keeping your questions in the Autopia University area. If you want to participate in a discussion outside of this area, that's okay, but all apprentice questions should be posted here

Guys,

I've read up on the PC and have one question:

From what I read... it says "The pad does not rotate in the conventional sense, it oscillates. This "jiggling" occurs at such a high rate that the eye can not see any pad movement."

Does the PC not spin at all? Or does it just not spin normally?

It spins in an elliptical pattern, not in perfect circles. It doesn't look like it's doing much to the naked eye, but trust me, it's capable of amazing things.:)

Welcome to Autopia! Sweet car by the way! Don't be affraid to clay. It's very easy to do. Just about fool proof. Spray enough QD or a car wash/water mixture on the surface & gently rub the clay in a back and forth motion over the surface in a 2x2 area. 3-4 passes should do the trick. wipe dry with a MF & move on to the next 2x2 area.

Just about everyone here uses a PC. Call me old school, but I have yet to buy one. I enjoy working by hand. HOWEVER, there's only so much you can do by hand. I, too, own a black vehicle & even I admit it's extremely difficult to remove any micro marring or minor scratches by hand. A PC is a must! I'll be picking one up very soon.

As for polishes, Optimum is the way to go. Menzerna & Poor Boy's are also nice products as well.

I see you're up in Canada. I'd recommend the Zaino system for you. It will protect your car the best throughout the harsh winters up there. Zaino is an investment of both time and money. Well worth it, though.

Klasse All In One topped by a quality carnauba will produce a great wet look on your black bimmer. (PoorBoy's EX,WG,Chemical Guy's Extreme Top Coat Sealant are also great sealant choices for black) Black paint loves carnaubas! So many combos.....so little time. The waxes I use over sealants are: Natty's Blue,Souveran,Butter Wet Wax,P21S,Trade Secret,Meg's #26,Blitz,DP Max Wax,XXX Hardcore Paste just to name a few. All of these are teriffic waxes on black & I wax about every 2 weeks to maintain a stunning look on my Black tacoma. ( I use Zaino in the winter) Check out the Natty's Blue!
