Need Assistance From Udm Users

I would like to know if the UDM has less vibration than the PC 7424?
As some know I am in a wheelchair with one good arm and I can work the PC pretty good but if the UDM has less vibration when polishing that would help me alot, and is the UDM any larger in circumference than the PC? thanks

I do notice that it has less vibration, so if the PC vibration concerns you at all, then you would enjoy the UDM. The UDM seems to almost float effortlessly across the paint. It would be a great tool in your situation I think.

There are other issues with it right now that are being worked out, so I wouldn't suggest buying one until after November when all the updates are completed on them. They are changing the power switch and putting a longer cord on it I believe. From what I read on Autopia it looks like the UDMs manufactured after November will have all these upgrades already included. You definitely don't want to get one until they fix the power switch issue.

Not too off topic........But an FYI, I just checked with David at Autopia..All registered users of the UDM will get the switch modification mailed to them beginning Sept. 1st. It appears to be a simple mod...this is the only issue I have with my UDM. Given the fact I've never owned any other type of Random Orbital Polisher I really can't comment on the power cord length. I suppose if I had gotten used to the longer cord I would have expected it on the UDM. David did not mention a "user" mod to the power cord...(Don't think I would want to tackle that one myself anyhow:eek: )

Thank you very much for your input on my questions and my situation. If the UDM has less vibration that will help me out alot on the fatigue factor.
What is the issue with the power switch though?

ps, I did read Jngbrdman's thread but it said as I understand this sentence anyway that the UDM has more vibration but is quieter. I am concerned about vibration while the machine is working . thanks

Other things to note are the vibrations. The UDM seems to vibrate less when there isn't a pad on it, but one I put the Edge 2000 white pad on and put a coat of wax on my Reflex I noticed that it does vibrate quite a bit more. It is quieter than the PC though, so that is a decent trade. I'll get better forearm muscles, less damage to my ears, and a bit of a massage while I'm using it I guess.

I just purchased a UDM but I have never owned a PC. I used 4-in cyclo pads this weekend and no complaints about vibration or noise. It seemed better than some drills I have used.....

Switch issue: When the switch is in the off position, it is exposed (not between some ribs on the housing) so if you put the UDM on the ground upside down (switch side down), it could get accidentally turned on. The fix appears to be just a new smaller plastic actuator for the slide switch so it is protected by the ribs in the housing to prevent accidental movement.

Vibration and Excel: David said there is a counterweight change coming to work better with excel pads. This was going to be addressed in the next production update. There is supposedly no issue with regular (non-Excel type) foam pads.

The comment about it vibrating more is because the counterweight on the UDM isn't the best for the Edge system. That is another upgrade they will do at a later date. I was told by David that the whole counterweight and backing plate attacment area (whatever you call all that stuff inside the 'bell') is interchangable if you want to take it all apart. Once I get my new switch I'm going to do that I think. I like the UDM, but that power switch and the incompatibility with Edge right now makes it a little frustrating.

Yes it is a little thicker than the PC. You still should be able to handle it with one hand just fine.

Thanks for the help everyone it seems a UDM will be on my list ...the least fatigue I can give my arm the longer I can hold the polisher.:thanks

Just thought I would update.....I purchased a UDM and have used it 3 times now and it is a very nice machine...(quiet,smooth, powerful) :yay
I only wish it had a larger backing plate or 6" pads were available.:rockon What happened to LC'S regular smooth ,curved pads they were great .:rockon
I am not sold on these dimples yet.:passout:

Everyone is different, but I have switched to the low profile 5.5 CCS pads for my buffer and I really like them. More versatile and I'm getting better(quicker) results with my orange pad.

A lot of people like to use the 6" pads on the 5" backing plate so you could do that. I personally like my backing plate to support all the way to the edges so if I were to use the 6" pads, I would switch to the 6" plate as well.

I started with the 5-in CCS pads too. I also got the smaller (safer) backing plate but after a couple sections I changed to the standard 5-in backing plate and never looked back.

The videos never show is how you have to get on the ground to get to some surfaces on the bumpers, lower sides, etc. They always show working on the hood or a large tailgate on an SUV. Car lifts would be nice.
