Need advice on interior detailing

zesty-man

how do ya like it?
this is probably my biggest problem. i dont do the interior of a car very well. i was wondering, what products do you guys use for the interior of the product. basically speaking, im thinking of shampoos, dressings etc.

Hi zesty-man,

Oh man, the way your going I think you will own your shop soon and will be hiring me as a part-time help. :D

Interior Dressing:
vinyl = PB Natural Look, 303, Lexol
leather = PB Natural Look, Lexol, or Pinnacle

Do you own an water extractor? What about a PC carpet brush?

Shampoo for carpet:
Meguiar's APC, Prestone, Folex

Steps to clean carpets:
1. Vacuum
2. Scrub
3. Wipe
4. Rinse
5. Vacuum

With Aloha,
Ranney :)

thanks for the help ranney, and now the answers to the questions, and my own questions. by the way, ill probably working for you (i dont think its fair that i cant vote, yet i have to pay taxes for my own business)

do i own a water extractor? nope
do i own a PIC carpet brush? nope, but i am interested in getting one, can you give me a hyperlink to where i can get one?

ah, as for the interior, i think ill stay with the poorboys natural look, considering it can be used for both vinyl and leather, however i might add the lexol if need be. as for the carpet, i think i can find the megs APC somewhere around hawaii, if not ill just go online and get some. now here comes my questions..

should i do the interior of a car first, before even washing the car?
how do you maneuver around those little switches, controls etc in a car with an interior cleaner?
should i do anything with the seats?
is there any kind of vaccuum in particular i should be looking for?
how do i take care of bad odors in the car? (I have to do a car that has that doggie smell in it)

Tyler...

Try 303 Aerospace Carpet Cleaner...I found it at Daiei and I used either with an extractor or spray directly onto the carpets. Excellent stuff. Haven't found a stain that 303 couldn't take care of. :)

I also use this enzyme spray that I get from the hospital for really bad stuff. This is the stuff the coroners/medical examiners use when cleaning up their van. Yeah...I'm just glad I don't have to touch that thing! ;)

:wha Please do share and tell more about this "enzyme spray" :) :wha

The one I get from the hospital is called scope-zyme. I'm not sure who makes it...but I'll ask the staff tomorrow.

But basically, the enzymes break down organic matter to remove the stain and smell. I can tell you it does work because two years ago, I did my rotation at the L.A. County Medical Examiners office. I've never been bothered by the sight of dead bodies, but the smell is another thing. This enzyme spray is the thing i remember reaching for the most... I even had to wash my clothes with it... Bad...thank god I'm out of there now. :)

hmmm, ill look into that one tomorrow. what do i do with those rubber matts that come in some cars?

I usually just wash them with car washing soap (your pick!)...

I find that some degreasers will dry the mats out and I never dress them...

I would like to throw in Detailer's Pride Capet and Upholstery cleaner. It does a good job with stains/dirt and has a pleasant smell.

Plexus is a nice product for clear platic parts such as guage cluster covers and wood that has a plasitc coating on it (BMW).

303 is my fav protectant with Poorboys Natlook and Lexol Vinylex a close second.

Some good glass cleaners are Eiman Fabrik, Detailers Pride, Invisible Glass, and Mothers.

Always, always dry buff the glass and vinly/plastic/rubber after cleaning and/or apply a protectant.

You NEVER dress MATS.

As for shampooing the interior I would suggest that you get a BISSEL "Little Green" Deep cleaner @ Wally World. A hand job is just not good enough to clean the interior. But the key is all in the vacuuming of the interior and the prep work if POSSIBLE remove the seats this work will become much easier

ALWAYS HANG YOUR MATS SO THE BACK DRIES FIRST

Just my 2cents GOOD LUCK

k, thanks for the advice, ill try to keep it in mind. also, how about getting all of those little dust particles out? ive heard that make-up brushes are great for taking out dust. is that true?

Meguiars NXT GEN TECH PROTECTANT Hands down is the best interior dressing i have ever used and also now i use it on exterior trim and it so great...... I LOVE THIS PRODUCT

BTW CHRIS Y. WHATS A DEAD BODY SMELL LIKE ANYWAYS?

Seriously, it's like so other smell I could even compare it to. Once you have taken a smell, you'll never forget and it lingers in your mind. Maybe I shouldn't go any further since I'd hate to upset anyone's appetite for the rest of the day, month maybe :)

corpses, scary thought... too much CSI for me. anyways, lets get on subject. how do you guys like to apply your interior dressings? is it smart to use microfiber, or a foam applicator or something? and do you like to remove some dressing with the microfiber?

I like to apply with a foam applicator and remove with a MF towel. Microfiber also to remove any excess dressing or get that matte finish I personally like.

I prefer Natural Lookover 303. No greasy finish, nice look. I even put it on the steering wheel, brake pedals, everywhere.
