Nano backing plate snapped off :(

Have any of you guys had this problem? I attached the smaller backing plate to my iBrid Nano, and put on a yellow pad (the one supplied with the Nano).

I set it on a speed of 4, and as soon as I got it up to speed on the paint (Menzerna 2400), the plastic backing plate snapped right off at the base (see attached photo).

At first, I thought - "not problem, it`ll be easy to get out of there". Not so. I tried to coax it out with a screwdriver after etching the plastic, then tried drilling it out, even tried to melt the plastic out with heat. In the end, I couldn`t remove it, without damaging the thread.

This sucks - it was the first time using the 12mm long-throw function unit, and also the first time using the 1.25" backing plate!

Any thoughts, apart from biting the bullet, and ordering a new function unit/backing plate?

Thanks guys.

How about trying an easy out. Drill the required hole them gently use the easy out with a 1/4" ratchet.

Thanks for your suggestion! Unfortunately, I thought it would come out much more easily, and didn`t have an easy suit to hand, so I drilled out the centre, hoping to jam a screwdriver in there to back it out. The resulting hole is too side to use an easy out, now.

I think I will just bite the bullet and buy a new function unit and backing plate :(

sorry to see this happened
luckily I believe they sell just that 12mm adapter to the ibird
I`d go double check but i`d probably see some sale and cave in :)

If it’s under warranty reach out to Rupes like grungy mentioned. Rupes has excellent customer service, I had an issue with my 1 inch backing plate and they took care of me without hesitation.

That sucks, it sure seems like that would have come out pretty easily. Did it thread on hard at all? I know it`s not hard to cross thread plastic threads when screwing into metal. Even if it was cross threaded it still shouldn`t have broken, at least not until you tried to remove it.
I haven`t had any problems with mine, mainly use the 12 mm or the rotary.

Was cold where you change the backingplate or where you worked with it? Plastic can be fragile in cold environment. If it where in a heated garage then I would contact rupes and see if they send you on warrenty. Or contact rupes either way and see what happens. Maybe you can get a good deal.

One thing you can do if you don`t see the thread is to use some clue on the screwdriver. Maybe you can get it out that way. The 12mm adapter is pricey and the backingplate not that much but not cheap either.

Got you some links and hope you can fix it some how.

Thanks so much you guys - I searched for a warranty avenue, but was unable to find the US distributor for RUPES.

It was in a heated garage, and definitely wasn`t cross-threaded, so I really do think it was defective, unfortunately.

I will contact RUPES - hopefully, they will take care of it. I have heard that their customer service is really excellent.

Thanks! Have a great week everyone!

This thread will help you out. You could always PM Todd Helme here on Autopia. I can`t recall if Dylan is here.

Gee, timely thread for Yours Truly, if not in an encouraging way....I`d been toying with an ibrid Nano for Christmas, but between power connection issues and now this...eh, I dunno.

Do still wish they`d come out with a "both short and long versions" kit though.

you can but just the short or long neck machine, definitely pricey though. Not sure if it would be much less if they added it in a kit.

Yeah, that`s at least a step in the right direction. Waiting for that was my previous excuse ;)

Guess I was hoping for one of those bundles like Milwaukee sometimes offers.

Eh, at this point (and since the cars I want `em for are still mothballed) looks like I have another excuse to just wait some more.

Thanks so much for your input, you guys!

Quick update. I contact Detailed Image (I had to purchase from them, as I am in Canada, and as hard as I tried, I couldn`t get it to work out with Autopia, who I am otherwise VERY loyal to!!). They were AMAZING. I emailed them this past Sunday, and they not only responded on Monday, but shipped out a new function unit and backing plate THE SAME DAY.

KUDOS, to them. I also contacted RUPES, and will advise them that it has been taken care of, when they get back to me.

All is well.

@The Driver - THANKS for your help. I didn`t have extractors handy, and didn`t want to wait, so I tried drilling a small hole in the middle of the plastic stem, and them jammed a screwdriver in to try and back it out, but it just did not work. I thought it should come out easily. In the end, the plastic left it in the threads rendered the unit unusable, and I wasn`t able to extract the plastic from the threads :(

At any rate, excellent service was encountered, and I am a very happy camper!

Thanks again, all!
