My winter wax decision test.....with images

Well....my truck and my girls live a VERY harsh life in the winter. I usually do not have the time during the winter to wax the trucks. Before winter hits hard they both get done. Over the last 3 winters I have changed sealants and haven't been blown away by any with their longevity. I have used Opti-Seal, Collinite 476s double wax and Collinite 845 insulator wax. Today I was bored after an 11 hour day at work and decided to give the hood a quick polish with PO 203(power finish) on a green pad. I then wiped the hood down twice with IPA. I did the drivers side of the hood in 845iw and brought in a new comer Blackfire Wet Diamond sealant on the passenger side. 845iw was applied by PC on PAC red flat pad. The WD was applied by a gold flat pad from PAC. I am straight up going for longevity with this test. I did not care about easy on/easy off, looks, slickness, etc. These trucks are driven north 200 miles every weekend in the winter to snowmobile. We also live RIGHT on the ocean. Along with those two downfalls, the airport is across the bay from us and the landing/takeoff path of the planes comes right over the driveway. I will have to take a picture from the yard of the planes 200 feet above my driveway.

Well anyways, onto the pictures, this hood has seen 170,000 rough miles. They are kinda dark since it was........late evening when I did this.

Jokeman,

Sounds interesting.

I've tried 476s in the past, with abysmal results. Truly one of the most disappointing products in recent memory. I've got Wet Diamond on wifey's DD right now and it seems to be holding up quite nice.

I've always liked 845 as well, so I will be very interested to see what you find. Right now my car is wearing Z2Pro and if you listen to what many zealots tell you, it's good for 6 months (although I personally find that very hard to believe).

476s did fairly well for me.

Zaino everyone raves about. I have stayed away from it for one reason, if the car isnt polished out very well it will amplify the issues with the paint. My truck is a little swirly right now since I havent had much time to polish the paint.

The one sealant that did last a winter was the Klasse SG, but I also put it on and did not remove it. It setup like a rock. I had to clay it off in the spring.

I applied ZAIO, followed by two coats of Z2 back in Oct, and it was still beading first of April. The only thing I did was wash my car with Duragloss car wash, and a couple of times use Z6, or DG FC&S.

Now was it still protecting? Who knows. I don't think anyone can truly answer this question for "any products" without scientific facts to back up their claim.

Zaino's a good product, but imo it's very temperamental to the point I don't use it much anymore.. If I do I apply it. I normally leave it, and try not to add additional coats to it. If Zaino were easier to use in my climate it would likely be my go to product.

I guess I'll see how Blackfire wet ice does this winter.

Good post and I agree on many levels.

I'm going to do my "winter detail" on Wifey's ride in November with my fire over ice combo and then do another three applications of Z2Pro on my car. I'll compare the results in January, when the going get rough in Soviet Canuckistan.

Sounds good...

Hopefully, when you get some free time (I know you're busy) you'll have time to do a review on the Midnight Sun wax. I hope I haven't missed it.. You haven't given your thoughts on it have you?

Well its been a month and its raining today. Beading is pretty much equal. The only difference I have found so far is that the Blackfire side seems to stay dirtier. The 845 side always seems cleaner. Truck has been washed once since the hood was done with CG Citrus wash and gloss. So far I am impressed with both sealants, its making my decision tough for a winter sealant.

On a side note, I did both my sleds with Blackfire and they look the best the ever have. Now to polish all the aluminum:biggrin:

If I went anywhere near my wife's DD's with a bottle of wax, she slap me silly !! Sorry, couldn't resist...
