My son's first fight

BLUELINE 1

Protect and Shine
My son who is 15 yrs old had his first sparring tonight. He started taking boxing lessons about 2 months ago. When we got there I found out who he was going to fight and had kinda tell him a small lie so he wouldn't get scared. The boy he fought was 18 and was built like Mike Tyson. He wore his high school weight lifting shirt to let everyone know that he was in the 300pound benching club, which didn't make me feel any better. My son was much taller which at 15 is standing 6'1 but this boy was like a bulldawg. I told my son that the boy was only 15 also and that he could take him. But anyways in the 1st round my son got rocked where his mouth piece came flying out, but after that it was all over with. He returned the favor with a hard jab and that resulted in a bloody nose for the other boy. It was only 3 rounds and my son ended up winning all 3. Heres a small clip of the second round that I took with my camera. In one part I forgot I was recording when my son got backed up into the corner and took a hard right but he fought out of it. After the fight I let him know that the boy was 18. Do you think I was wrong for telling him that the boy was 15 to calm him down? Click on it and hit play

I don't think you were wrong at all. There comes a time when age doesn't matter anyway. This will be a great confidence builder for your boy. He is at that age where it is important to suceed at this kind of thing. Tell him congrats for me!

There is nothing wrong with telling him the kid was 15 when he was older.
All you did was prepare him mentally for his bout, and didn't let him go in there thinking he was at a disadvantage before the first bell rang.

Good for your son on winning all 3 rounds :bigups

i spar with tkd (theres alot more to it) and i know half the fight in mental. Walking into it if i know im going to loose I will. Even the pros use tricks. Good job. I think it worked well as he did win. And tell him congrats

I'm going to have to agree with the masses on this one. What you said only helped his confidence going into the fight. Tell him congrats for me.

There is nothing wrong with telling him that the kids was 15. I assume they were paired up by weight, so thats all that mattered there.

Your son did a great job of using that jab to keep that little bulldog from getting inside on him. Letting a fighter like that get inside can be devastating, ie Tyson. Keep working on that footwork. That is the foundation on which a boxer is built. It was a great first fight. Thanks for the video.
