My Foam Gun Review - Long w/Pics

First of all, let me say Thank You to Steve for arranging the group buy & Bill D & Setec Astronomy for patiently answering all my newbie questions about this new toy!!

It sat in the garage & taunted me for a week, until I could finally get all the "necessary" (in my mind only) quick connects & shut-off valve. I wanted to have the "coolest gun in the West" ;)

Today was the day!! After reviewing my notes for the umpteenth time, I filled my "customized" measuring bottle with 9 parts water & 1 part Poorboys Super Slick 'n Suds & poured it into the half gallon container. It was only half full, but I figured that would give me a good start.

I wet the car down with the "fireman's nozzle", easily removed it & switched to the foam gun. I had installed quick connects & a shut-off valve on the end of the hose to make the changes easy. I had also removed the “trigger as I thought my hand might tire of holding it open as I soaped the car.

I set the “mix to the second click, turned the lever on the shut-off valve & out came the foam!! The car was not overly dirty, mostly dust which had been loosened by the wet-down.

I tried out a new grey mitt I had purchased from sheepskin.com – didn’t really need it though, the foam just lifted the dirt & carried it away!!

I switched back to the fireman’s nozzle for a rinse, and moved on to the next area. When I was done, I finished with a flood rinse, dried with two PAC grey waffle weave towels & gave it a finishing touch of PB’s Spray & Gloss.

All told it took me less than 15 minutes to wash the entire car and the suds never let up. In fact, when I was done, I still had half of the solution remaining in the jar!!

So that means that I used only one and one-half ounces of SS’nS to wash the V!! Normally, I might be concerned that so low a concentration might compromise the effectiveness of the shampoo, but there was NO SHORTAGE of suds!!

And perhaps the greatest plus of all – words from my 18 year old "assistant" – the gun makes it “fun to wash the car!!!

Great tool isn't it!? Thanks for the pictorial and I'm sure you'll wonder how you managed with it! Yep, the quick disconnects help out tremendously. You have the same set up as I do. Happy washing!

That would be a Gilmour brand gun. it has been noted though, the three main foam guns out there, gilmour, butchers, and simple green, all use gilmour components. I ordered a simple green foam gun with a half gallon jar wednesday of last week and have yet to receive it from safetyplus. sent them an email this evening asking if it shipped yet/what is the estimated arrival date. hopefully i'll get it soon!

Gilmour brand-

call PAL Automotive. It's a nice detailing shop in NJ. Bill D has given there number in a few foam gun threads over the past months. Search thru them for the number seeing as i feel like being lazy right now!

i know automagic.biz sells a foam gun (butchers brand i believe), but i think the one that they sell is the plasic version vs the nicer brass ones. there are other places, but i dont remember what they were.

I hope that ladder is clean, and I hope you didn't set that sprayer bottle on the ground at all, before putting your WW down like that. ;)

Nice writeup! It was worth all 6 minutes of download time :(

Cool Norah! I paid for mine this morning from Steve. Hopefully it will make washing my mom's Single Stage black ride a little easier and marring free.

Glad to see these things are getting a little easier to find.

NorahCRV- Glad you like the foamgun so much!

Way2SSlow- Yeah, no way would I try to wash a ss black vehcile without one! Heh heh, I wouldn't even try to wash your SS without a foamgun.

That is not the same gun. It is a foam gun but it is made of plastic.

Yeah, there are two versions of the Butcher's/Gilmour/Simple Green foamgun, one with a plastic mixing valve and one with a brass rod style mixing valve.

I'm not sure that just because a company's website shows one or the other that *that* is necessarily the one they're actually selling. I'd call and talk with somebody to make sure you're getting the one you expect.

IIRC, and I could be misremembering, the last one I bought from CJMS *was* the brass rod version even though their website shows the plastic one.

Yes, the ladder was "clean", and I only hang towels on it when I'm done with them. I have about a dozen of those waffle weaves, so it's no problem to break out a new one if I find a drip that needs addressing.

I have a divided bucket from Rubbermaid that is the perfect size for holding the gun upright in one side & rinsing mitts in the other, so the gun did not touch the driveway at all.

Sorry it took you so long to download :( but glad you found it worthwhile :)

Norah, you can load up on the mitts like you did with the WWs and not have to worry about rinsing them before continuing using them any more.

Norah, where did you get that coiled hose? I need something like that. Not sure if I've seen it at Home Depot or not...

Thanks Bill, I'm doing very well @ spending my money! ;)

Joe, I found that one @ Sam's Club a year ago, but I have seen similar @ Home Depot & Lowes. As I recall it was less than $15. :)

I received my half gallon simple green foam gun today. This thing is awesome! I used a two bucket method with the foam gun to provide pre-rinse and it worked perfectly. I took off the pistol grip and used a quick connector on the gun w/ a hose end shut off valve and it was really easy to use. I had a fire hose nozzle w/ another quick connector standing by for the pure water rinse after washing a section. The quick connectors and the shut off valve were the best 10 bucks ive ever spent at home depot! The foam just let the mitts glide gently and easily over the paint. The lubricity was amazing. The only problem that i had was the shut off valve was hard to turn when my hands were soapy and I used an entire half gallon of solution in one wash, but i can contribute that to being new to the tool. I did around 1 part SS&S to 7 parts water in the jar (basically, i eyeballed it).
