My Flex XC 3401 VR is on the way - see inside for details!

Ok, I decided last Thursday to go ahead and get a Flex XC 3401 VR polisher and finally was able to get one ordered today. As some others on here have stated, it's tough as hell to track somebody down to get one. I tried ZoranC's connection with Western Tool. His contact there, Peter Isaacson?, is no longer with the company, so that's probably why folks were having trouble there. I spoke with his replacement a few times, Joyce?, and she said there is one in their system but supposedly on hold for someone. She was supposed to be checking and calling me back...from Friday morning. So, I tried FrostyDog's connection, Jeffrey from Dixie Construction Products. Spoke to him this morning and he was going to check into it and call me back. Western Tool quoted $319 + shipping and Dixie hadn't given me a quote yet, but Frosty picked it up for 3 bills. I also e-mailed the Midwest distributor rep and he was checking into it as well, but hadn't heard back by end of day either after a follow-up e-mail to him.

Instead of giving up, I called Flex North America directly and asked if they could sell me one. That I've called a few distributors and wasn't having any luck. They referred me to Power House in Omaha, NE, their main service parts distributor. They said that Flex could not sell directly, but that Power House could since they sell service parts, they could sell the entire tool as well. She gave me a couple of names there, but when I called an extremely nice gentleman by the name of Ben answered. I explained my situation, and he said that it is relatively new in their system, but they should be able to get one ordered. He quoted me a price of $269:woot: . I wanted to ask if that was the right price, but waited until after giving him my shipping address and CC info. He said it will ship out tomorrow directly from Flex's warehouse in SC. Out of curiosity, he asked what I had been quoted at other places, and couldn't hardly believe that the other places were charging $300 or greater. That's when I asked if he was sure on the price. He was. Said it will probably be $10-$15 for shipping.

Ben was extremely nice to deal with on the phone, and I mentioned that there might be some other folks interested in buying these and he is 100% fine with folks contacting him directly. I don't think they are supposed to sell outside a designated territory, but he said considering this situation, he'll sell them all day long to wherever in the U.S. Power House's phone number is 888-809-4749, and supposedly they have plenty in stock in their SC warehouse. I am also going to e-mail him a few links on this site so he can see the interest level in this polisher. I know there are only a few reviews of it so far, but I need something with some more a$$ than the PC. The PC does do paint correction, but I need something quicker. I know, some may recommend a rotary, but I'm not quite there yet. Hopefully, the Flex will bridge the gap. Sorry for the long post, but wanted to share all the details.

Congratulations!!! Welcome to XC 3401 VRG Owner's Club! Yay! Look what I started ;)

$269 + shipping is definitely lowest I heard of. At that price it should be putting practically everything else but rotary out of consideration.

... and trust me, you will not say you feel you are lacking power with Flex. I didn't try it on car yet (that is, I hope, coming this weekend) but I did polish shower walls with it and it was breezing through a task.

Let us know how you like it.

ZoranC - cool, thanks for the encouragement and help via PM. Also, I need to order some 6.5" pads for it tomorrow so I have them in time for the weekend. Looks like the only game in town are some Lake Country CCS pads. There's also some Detailer's Paradise 6.5" pads on that site as well that look like traditional foam pads instead of the CCS pads. I have the Edge 2K system for my PC, so they are non-transferrable. What would you recommend? Thanks.

I haven't ever heard of this machine before. Is it a rotary or DA type polisher?

From what I understand, it's a DA type polisher on steroids. Believe it goes up to 9600 opms. There have bene several other posts regarding it recently on this forum and the Machine Polishing forum.

You are welcome and I am happy it is working out for you :)

If you remember I haven't had chance to use it much yet so I don't have long term experience which pads will be holding up best but I have a feeling my CCS pads are starting to disintegrate with it. I don't know is that because of same reason other's had (CCS pads from CMA) or it is because this is too powerful for CCS design. Excel Erasure pads I got from Excel Detail have been holding up just fine at full speed and they are not CCS. I would give Erasures a try.

Just got a call from Power House and the Flex is being shipped out today. These guys are the real deal!!! BTW, it seems they also carry several other power tool lines as well.

Welcome to the club Jonny!!! :hifive:

Though currently a small club...

I've only logged about 10-12 hours with my Flex so far, but I haven't noticed any unusual wear on my pads. I actually really like the size of the Backing Plate that comes with the Flex. It's sized in metric...but it ends up being just slightly smaller than a 6.5 inch pad. This is good...because I'm thinking if too much pad edge was left "over-hanging" from the backing plate, that the Flex may be powerful enough to start tearing into the pad from the backing plate side. Specifically if you are doing some correction and putting some pressure on it.

My only issue with CMA pads is they used to not carry the velcro backing all the way to the edge of the pad (they would leave about a 1/2 inch gap on the outer edge of the pad)...which was fine for PC use. But I'm thinking you'll want edge to edge velcro backing, so the Flex has as much surface area to grab the pad as possible.

Hey, Frostydog and ZoranC, I just spoke with the Powerhouse distributor and they told me that mine should come with a black colored backing plate. That the original red ones that came on them tear apart and the velcro piece could become unglued from the actual backing plate surface. Ben with Powerhouse, said that they should all be fixed in the warehouse shipping out going forward. I asked about the folks that already purchased one, and he said that they should be able to call them, and he can have a new one sent out replaced under warranty. Sounds kind of like the Festool issue, buy Flex caught it pretty quick and are offering replacement backing plates. I think there might have been 1 or 2 others on here that have ordered one as well.

So, again, if YOU HAVE A RED BACKING PLATE, CALL POWERHOUSE DISTRIBUTING FOR A REPLACEMENT. Their number is 888-809-4749.

DJ_JonnyV: Thanks for the updated purchase info !

And thanks to the original Flex XC 3401 VR club members for starting it all....

Those of you that have used the Flex do you find it vibates too much as there were some old past posts mentioning a possible vibration isssue?

Thanks for the info Jonny...I'm at work now, so I can't check for sure, but I'm 99% sure my backing plate is black.

You know what, the more I think about it...I'm pretty positive my BP is black, but the velcro may be red. I’ll have to check for sure when I get home.

Jonny, are you referring to the color of the backing plate itself…or the color of the Velcro on the BP??

Zoran….is your Flex handy?? Can you check yours??

Sorry about that, I'm referring to the color of the velcro pad. I remember seeing pics of Zoran's and believe his is red.

In other news, the midwest distributor's rep just e-mailed me and said he ordered a sample one from Flex and was going have to sell it through a local distributor. I feel bad telling the guy I don't need it anymore. Not sure what price he was going to quote though, and there's that sales tax thing...

Howard, I have not used it on a car yet, I used it to clean up shower walls :chuckle :but I did not find any unpleasant vibrations, tool was easy and efortless to hold for me, so far. Ask me again after this weekend as this weekend I should be working with it whole day long :)

I don't have it handy but my velcro is red for sure and plate itself is, if I remember correctly, black. Let me double check ...

Yup. Red on black.
