My first Rotary 7 year old White GrandAm

Since my wife was away for the weekend and I had some time to myself I thought I would get her car ready for spring. This was my first time ever using a rotary and also Menzerna products.

Background: 2000 Pontiac GrandAm GT used year round, is washed weekly by my wife when she fill up with gas during the winter.

Initial Inspection: The paint was swirled horribly it still had some protection from the Poli-Seal I used last fall but it needed topping. Those pictures are of the hood but the car looks like this all over.

Plan of attack:

Wash with PB Slick Suds.

Clay the entire car removing all paint contamination and there is a lot.

SIP with the Green Edge Pad. Rotary x2

106 with the Blue Edge Pad Rotary x1

Poli-Seal with the White Pad PC x1

Victoria Wax by hand.

Black Wow for all black plastic.

Optima tire Shine for tires.

Stoners Invisible Glass for the glass.

SIP Results:

I'm happy with the progress it's so much easier doing correction with the Rotary than the PC.

Hood Finished:

I'm amazed how good the car looks I've never had white paint glow like this before.

Full car in the Sun:

I had to wait to get these shots since it was raining all weekend.

Thanks for looking!

Wow that has awesome glow and reflection.....especially for white. Was it very tricky using the rotary on the lower doors with those raised edges?

Thanks, the lower panels weren't easy. I found it hard to keep the rotary from skipping around. I ended up laying down on the floor to do those parts I would love to have a lift to do this sort of correction work.

Nice work ! Did you get any "hologramming" ?

I did on one small section but I blame that on my being very tired an not being as vigilant with my concentration for the most part everything finished down really well. It think I got lucky with the pad and product selection vs the paint's hardness. I really want to do a a black car now to see how it differers.

The car looks awesome. How long have you be using the PC before this?

I've had my PC for about 6 years but only really got using it a lot last year. For the most part it stayed in the box for the majority of the time. I would say I have less than a dozen good cars with the PC.

That's some of the nicest looking white paint I've seen. Truly looks like a professional job. I bet your wife is gonna be thrilled! Now you just gotta keep her away from the neighborhood swirl-o-matic. :)

As I said in the other thread, nice work for your 1st time with the rotary!

That is one thing I don't miss about cleaning 5th gen GAs, the ribbing is a major pain to work with.

Looks really nice. Any suggestions for a soon to be first time rotary user? Did you find it hard to work with?

Don't be scared of it. If you start out at a lower RPM until you get the feel of it you will have more time to react to it trying pull you all over the place. It took me most of the hood to start to get comfortable so thats 4 passes over a pretty big hood. Using smaller 6" pads will help as well I found the 8" pad would drag me all. Once you feel like your getting the hang of it just up the speed a bit. Each time you change surface I would lower the speed. I went back to about 800RPM when I started on the C pillars, doors bumpers etc each pass i upped the RPM a few 100.

It's not at all what I expected I thought I would spend the entire time scared to death that I was going to burn the paint. As long as you keep moving and watch your speed you will be fine. My Rotary has a trigger that operates like a throttle no the on off that the PC has. That makes it great for cutting in and picking up product.

Like anything in life your not born with experience that you get by doing so get out there and try it.

Wow, truly impressive work!! It looks like you've used the rotary a hundred times. The paint is indeed glowing and nice and glossy.

Keep it up!

ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! That's one of the brightest , cleanest whites I've seen in some time... Now where are those darn sunglasses!!:2thumbs:

How would you rate the hardness of the paint? Is it pretty hard when compared to others? I am going to be doing my 2003 GAGT in a couple of weeks but I will only be using a PC.

The GA's have decent paint. Mid grade in hardness I'd say. Just watch out for the louver things on the bottom, I've found the paint to be very thin on the plastic bits.
