My first experience

Well 2 weeks ago I received my first PC and sonus pad kit along with some AIO. It finally stopped raining here in So Cal so I was able to use my new toys on my '02 Lex GS (silver).

As I have read on many a posting here I did not expect the silver paint to have the same reflective properties as do the darker colors therefore I was going more for the feel than the look.

The paint was always in good condition as I clayed and hand detailed the car about every 4 months. I will say after reading this msg board that I noticed some fine swirl / spiderweb marks on the paint.

Here's what i did, feel free to comment positively or negatively as I am looking for some feedback (and Im not that sensative LOL). First I washed & dried it. Then using the green pad i hit the hood, roof and trunk with some 3M hand glaze, then I used the AIO, then I finished it off with some Meg yellow car wax (liquid). I also tried the mother carnuba past by breaking off a chunk, rubbing it on the pad then applying it. This process got to be a little messy so I went back to using the liquid wax from Meg.

Day 2, because I couldnt beat the sun on day 1, I hit all the side panels. This time (just to see the difference) I hit the side panels with Meg #7 (?) the show car glaze i think it's called. Then hit the panels with the AIO and finished with the Meg yellow liquid wax again.

I ran my hands across the paint and it was like glass I must admit, not one rough spot on the car. I wasn't able to see my garage reflecting on the hood but I sure felt nice.

It has been about 2 weeks since I tackled the self detailing arena and was pretty happy with myself until yesterday when I caught a glimpse of my hood and noticed a few swirl marks, I crouched down a little more and noticed more. Needless to say that Big Gulp I had just bought wasn't tasting so refreshing as I was a little upset. The marks were not put there by me but never-the-less they are there.

I quickly ran to my local pep boys and picked up some scratch X and some Meg #9 i think? All i remember right now is that one was a 3 on the cutting scale while the other was a 5 (talking about the Meg polishes i bought). Apparently the 3M hand glaze and the Meg #7 wasn't tough enough. I also ordered the KLASSE SG, we'll see how that works after I de-swirl mark the car.

Anyone have any quick ideas on how to get rid of those light swirl marks on the hood? It's absolutely nothing major,

it took me 2 weeks to notice, but now that I know they are there its bugging me. If i have the Meg #2, 9, 7 and scratchX is that enough? Where is scratch X on the polish scale? would it be considered a moderate, light or heavy polish??

Well thanks in advance for any input.

scratch X is a very mild polish designed to be used by hand, some have tried it witht he pc and had problems with it gumming up on the pads. you are trying the least aggresive method first and thats great, the next step i thijnk would be megs #80 if what you bought doesnt give you the results you desire, keep trying your learning right along with us, keep us posted :up

Asonyexec- Welcome to Autopia! Sounds like you were taking pretty good care of your Lexus even before you found this site.

The 3M IHG and Meg's #7 are nonabrasive, and the stuff (fillers) they leave behind are mostly cleaned off by products like AIO. I probably wouldn't use those two products (IHG and #7) on your car if it were mine.

If the Scratch-X and #9 aren't strong enough to remove your marring, yeah, try the Meg's #80. Or 3M PI-III MG (pn 05937/39012 depending on size). Or 1Z Paint Polish. Many other choices, but those are all easy to use and effective. Some of these might be hard to find; I order mine from online vendors.

Then follow with the AIO and wax.

I absolutely would *not* use the #2 on your car. To aggressive for what you're doing.

Welcome Asonyexec, It sounds like you need something a little more abrasive to remove those marks. # 80, as previously mentioned would probably be a good choice as would any low abrasive polish. I would stay away from glazes as they tend to hide the marks not remove them. I have been using 1Z polishes with great success, 1Z PP would do the trick and even MP might do it. Any way good luck I don't think you will have much trouble removing those marks.

Hey Accumulator, I started my reply and had to leave the room for a minute and by the time I came back and posted it I noticed yours and would not have even replied. My reply is a little redundant.

Nah, not so much redundant as just being in agreement :xyxthumbs Might make it easier for Asonyexec to make the right decision.

well thank you all for the information. I have paint store close to my home that has a section specializing in automotive paints and equipment. I did see the Meg #80 on their shelves so I might give that a try per your advice.

Per ACUMMULATORS advice I will be tossing the bottle of Meg's #2 and replace with the #80. Will also do the same with the scratchX.

One other quick one. Is it common to use the PC to apply wax or is that typically done by hand??

Thanks again to you all.

I would apply the wax by hand, I don't see a benefit to using the PC. Also, I don't find it faster or easier by PC.

~One manâ€â„¢s opinion / observations~

Nothing much to add to all this good advice but (thereâ€â„¢s always a butâ€Â¦)

Quote: Day 2, because I couldnt beat the sun on day 1, I hit all the side panels. This time (just to see the difference) I hit the side panels with Meg #7 (?) the show car glaze i think it's called. Then hit the panels with the AIO and finished with the Meg yellow liquid wax again. EOQ.

AIO contains a chemical cleaner and a polymer (itâ€â„¢s a one-step type product) point being AIO will remove anything applied previously

~Hope this helps~
