My first Black Car what have I done to myself

I just picked up a new toy a 1994 Black Mazda Miata with Hard Top, it has very light swirls in the finish I was expecting some very rough paint but overall not bad. I plan on

1) Dawn Wash

2) Clay Bar

3) Wash

4) 3m smr

Now do I follow up with 3m Imperial hand glaze and then top with either Zaino or S100?

Just let me know if I am going about it the right way

It depends whether you are doing this by hand or with a PC, If by hand, you may not get all (or a satisfactory amount of) swirls diminished. If not, then the application of a filler/glaze will help to hide the remaining defects. I don't have experience with the 3M product, but Mothers Sealer and Glaze works really well on my black Hyundai Santa Fe.

For a topper to the glaze I would suggest S100! Really good stuff and its readily available at your local Harley dealer. My latest favorite for the black car is Poorboy's EX. VERY nice shine, and I think it should last longer than S100. Then again, S100 is so easy to apply and remove, and you use so little to do the job, local availability of S100 may rule!

Good luck. Let us know how it turns out!

powerscadillac- I'm NOT a Z user, but I *THINK* you need a "clean" surface (no IHG; no SMR fillers) for Z to stick.

I've had rather disappointing results from IHG (used it for AGES), now I only use it on freshly repainted cars.

I'd remove the swirls with PI-III (effective but mild polishing, no fillers) instead of the SMR and THEN use the product of your choice. If you still need to fill in remaining swirls, take Gadfly's advice and use the Mother's (but it'll mean no Z). Oh, and you can skip the second wash by claying while you wash the first time. The PI-III will take off anything you miss. But as I recall, if you want to use Z, you should precede it with another (Dawn) wash.

so could I use the SMR and IHG and top with s100 and leave the Zaino for my other car, with the SMR and IHG should I return one or use them both or do they both do the same thing.

SMR has some (mild) abrasives and a bit of filler (hence the need to Dawn wash). IHG is ALL filler, just like #7 and the Mothers Glaze Gadfly mentioned. They do different jobs and the process usually goes: abrasive polish, glaze, wax. With Zaino or other sealants, the glaze step is usually deleted.
