My first attempt (finally)

I have an 05 "black" CC P/U which sees a lot of light, off road action. There are light scratches and a lot of swirls in the finish. I purchased a PC last fall but never got to use it, until this past weekend.

I am sure I made numerous mistakes and am looking for direction.

1) washed but did not towel dry (wife errands) so had water spots.

2) used PC with SSR1 for first pass on the tailgate
using an Edge orange pad (light cutting). I did see improvement but not what I expected after 2 passes.

3) switched to the PB SSR2.5 with same pad (after washing it) this improved results after a pass but am still not real happy. I was running the PC on 3 to apply and then increased speed to 5.5 in an "up/down" then "side to side" pattern moving over a small 2x2' area.

There were some scatches still evident (not thru the clear as far as I can tell) and water spots reamined to (kind of surprising). I was beign cautious and trying not bear down on the pc with pressure.

Any thougths are appreciated, I will try to get pics as I did not finish the truck so can show a representative before picture.

Well, I want to start of by saying you "can" achieve great results with the PC/LC Orange Pad/SSR's. How long are you working the SSR2.5? Take it real slow with the SSR2.5, do the movements you were doing before but take it "really" slow and work in a 2x2 area. It might take 5-10 minutes before the product breaks down until it is pretty much gone/clear.

1-2 passes even with the PC and SSR2.5 "with" a LC Orange Pad are not gonna cut it. Your not using a Makitta/Dewalt Rotary. Take your time and you will achieve better results and this is only your first time using the PC so don't worry about messing things up.

It's really hard to mess things up with the PC, just don't bang the backing plate in the paint of course :wall . You will most likely need to follow the SSR2.5 with SSR1 with a Polishing or finishing pad. Then you can go with a glaze or sealant if you like.

Remember, take your time. Things go much slower with the PC but you can achieve good results I promise. Good luck and if you have a camera try and post some pics.
 
thanks, I was working slowly but I am sure I stopped early as I would say I worked it 3-4 minutes not 5-10.

I was trying to judge the product breakdown but not having done this before I believe it may not have broken down completely as removal seemed a tad too difficult as if the product was still wet.

I will get pics and post.

While I have never used a cutting pad, I do find that when using a polishing pad with a paint correcting product, I do need to apply some pressure.
I spread the product at 2, then polish at 5 with enough pressure on the pad to make the PC slow down a little. I gradually decrease that pressure as the polish breaks down. As said previously, paint correction with the PC is slow.

SSR1 should not be use with a cutting pad, as it can create more swirls. It's a finishing polish not a scratch and deep swirl remover.
Every vehicle is different and don't assume scratches and swirls aren't deep in clearcoats unless you have a depth guage or a lighted magnifying glass, they can be deceiving.

All of the above and bump the speed up to #6 (there is no 5.5) and check out the links below for some added help. FWIW, I don't use cutting pads with SSR2.5, just polishing pads and even though it may not sound like it'd work, it does a great job. Take your time and let the product do the work.
