My Date with a Ford

Hello All,

Seeing all the Fords done recently, I had a 78 Ford Custom Pickup to do as a birthday gift. The truck belongs to a guy who inherited from his brother who had inherited from their dad. They took pretty good care of it, just a bunch of oxidation, but the wheels were rusted. Used some Race Glaze Polish and some 0000 steel wool.

Didn't take too many b4's b/c I didn't think the truck was all that bad. Compared to what M23Accord had to deal with, it was not.
 
WOW!! Now that's some detailin' there!! Looks super nice!!

I certainly do wish all paint could be like that of the "dipped" Ford pick-ups of the 70's... you can wash em' with Comet and they'll still polish out nice :)

Denver, I just saw ur football post! Man way to get it going! I did the wheels by hand, I got the idea to use polish from reading how people here used polish on things other than paint, so I tried them on the wheels and it worked great! Just had a hard time getting into all the little space but used some small screwdrivers tipped with the 0000 steel wool and was able to get them.

Here's a good tip for ya. Will save you tons of time.

Go pick up a wool polishing wheel from your local hardware. I think the discs are 3 inches in diameter. Just hook it up on your cordless or electric drill, add some polish and go to town. Try it, you'll thank me later. Doesn't help with the tight spots, but man what a time saver!
 
Next time you run into "chrome" wheels such as those, ya might wanna try some "pink naval jelly" before anything else. It can be found at places such as Pep Boys or NAPA Auto parts -- read the instructions on the bottle ;)

Dr. Detail,
what is pink naval jelly? tell us more, how does it work? Is it a chemical type restorer like a tarnX or something?
 
Naval Jelly

Naval Jelly works great on old rusty chrome steel wheels-- basically you brush it on, let it sit, then hose it off. It's really not pink, but the plastic bottle it comes in is (see link below). I would not use it on chrome wheels that are not steel (such as those on a Mercedes, BMW, Porsche, or most modern chromed wheels) for it can and will eat away at the copper layer which is used to adhere the chrome to the aluminum.

Description:
For safe and easy removal of rust from iron and steel. Naval Jelly is useful for preparing metal surfaces for painting. Paint will adhere better to iron and steel surfaces when cleaned will Naval Jelly. It is also an ideal pretreatment for all galvanized surfaces prior to painting

Directions:
For general cleaning of iron and steel, apply full strength with a paint brush, roller or sponge. Allow a dwell time of 5 to 20 minutes depending on the amount of rust to be removed. If heavy encrustations are present, use a wire brush to clean before applying. In severe conditions, it may be necessary to apply Naval Jelly several times. If this occurs, allow a longer dwell time, overnight if possible.
