My darkening plan.

Okay, so I've been doing alot of research on products which darken paint. I have recently aquired a 1985 yellow IROC-Z with original single stage paint. The 27 year old pigment has obviously faded. I've done all of the cleaning, claying, polishing steps, with good effect. But I'm looking for some trickery to darken the color somewhat.

My plan is to use Poorboys Black hole, sealed with Zaino Z5, (I happen to have a buttload of Z5 on hand). Both of these products are recommended for darker colors.

Thoughts?

I find the two products that darken the most are BFWD and Megs #26. I never noticed Z5 doing any darkening.

Beyond that, see any problems with using Z5 over Black Hole?

+1 for the M26. It doesn't last very long but it is amazing on darker color vehicles. Since your IROC-Z has SS paint, you might also want to look into Meg's M07 too, it may help getting a darker wetter look as well.

I've tried the traditional Megs products and can't honestly say that I saw a difference in darkness.

I'm going to order some Black Hole tonight and report back. If the Z5 has any darkening effect, that would be a bonus, (I've put some on already and didn't see any), but since I've got alot on hand, I'll be using it as a sealer.

I was also considering Red Moose Glaze, but I don't want to pay $15 shipping for a $17 bottle of product.

Just keep in mind that glazing the paint with M07 or Black Hole may have a detrimental effect on the Z5 bonding.

We'll see how it goes. Most likely the oily nature of #7 would create a smeary mess if overcoated with Z5. I've found Zaino to be a bit more finicky than advertised. I'd probably expect better compatibility with BH.

Prima Amigo is a VERY popular glaze across the pond and it definitely has a darkening effect. I love it, personally.

In my experience the Amigo + BFWD combo has darkened the paint VERY VERY VERY noticeably every time that I have tried it.

What additive brightens or darkens in these products. I don't want to be disappointed when it's to dark or to light. Or, don't like the plastic look after a period of time.

Most of the time I like the "right from the showroom" appearance

Most of these products contain resins and I believe that they are doing the darkening/enhancing (correct me if I'm wrong)

Glare does it too but I no longer use it or Amigo as they are solvent based, only use water based products now.

Doing any polishing will change the colour shade somewhat.

Protective coatings like the silica/quartz Gtechniq C1/Exo, 22PLE, Xpert's upcoming product and many other coatings definately darken the colour.

Blackfire (the combo of their polish and sealant) darkened so much that I quit using it, changed the look of that (particular) car too much for my liking.

Just an update... BH will not give the desired effect on a brightly colored car. But holy smokes, does it work great on my black daily driver!

Just wondering how long it'll last without a top coat of sealer.

Clearkote's Red Moose and Carnuaba Moose wax darkens my red paint so much it looks like a different color. Not sure what it would do to yellow though.

For yellow - I'd go with a sealant to get that glossy reflective plastic look....

Just my opinion.

BTW - nice car. NEED PICS!!!
