My car feels slightly gritty after a cleaning?

I have a 97 black Grand Prix w/ 120,000 miles on it. I thought I took pretty good care of my car until I found this forum.

Anyway a friend of mine works for Mercedez and he gave me some Meguires products. I washed my car with Dawn, then used the paint cleaning product and after that washed it again with a shampoo. When I run my fingers on the paint it feels gritty, is this normal? Would claying the car clean the paint better or do I need a something stronger?

Afterwards I used the all in one wax and the car is smoother and looks great but I want it to feel silky smooth.

If the grit seems to be stuck to your paint then clay would definatly help. Do a search on IFO (Industrial Fallout) and you'll learn real quick what it is. Clay should help a great deal. Head to AutoZone and pick up some Clay Magic. That stuff is the best. :up

My first thought was that perhaps it was just wax that you buffed off and it was just sitting on top of the car. If you buff off wax with a towel that is 'full' of wax then sometimes it will leave little goobers on your paint. They will blow off after awhile though. If the grit that you feel is attached to your car then get some clay. If it feels like its just rolling around on top then get a clean towel and wipe it down. Either way I think your problem is pretty easy to fix.

I'm with Jngr here. You need to remove all the surface contaminents first. Claying the paint will do this. You can do this now after you've waxed but you'll probably want to apply another coat of wax after claying. I think you'll find applying/removing the wax will be easier after claying.
