well i moved in to my new place and the garage was a disaster apparently the person who lived here before me threw parties in the garage everything was yellow stained and smelled of stale smoke and the floor was black with oil and misc. well i put on three coats of paint on the walls here a picture of my progress so far. next step is to coat the floor it still smells of smoke in the garage just not as bad. tommorw i do some t8 lighting

I hope you clean the walls before priming them. It's always good to use TSP on them ( cleaning them ) before putting on 2 coats of a oil based primer on them before painting.
 
It sounds like you are making progress.

For lighting, if you can get lights on the side walls or the extremes it can help illumination.
 
Right now i just bought 3 lights to experiment with see how placement works with getting rid of shadows and figure out how many i will need.
 
I did T5 lights in my garage. Great lighting. I even put a few on the sides. It provides perfect illumination for working. My neighbors think I am performing surgery at night :)
 
heres a crappy cell phone pic with 3 of the 6 lights up and the garage door covering one. i have not figured out what the wires hanging from the side are yet the previous owner must of done something with them.

looks like crap.....your 3rd light is crooked... you should fire the guy that hung those things......

the lights are amazing in there and once the other 3 are in and the floor is done it will be great...
