Moving the business...?

Hey all...

A couple questions, maybe some of you can chime in...

I was booted from my full time day job. Which is fine...in a way..but now I have a chance to move across the country to relocate my life in California.

I would pick up everything and go, then set-up shop where I end up. Detailing wouldn't be my main source of income, but if it pays the bills, then it will be. I may need to do it, until I can find a full time job.

Anyway, has anyone ever picked up and left? I would be leaving previous clients, and losing potential new clients, but im young and have some $ saved up. Family says, do it now, and if all else fails, you can come back.

Just wanted all your thoughts on it...

Much appreciated!

Mike, your right, I dont have anything tying me down! i tend to question myself, with the "what if's" like What if i dont like it? What if...blah blah blah

Run like the wind Forest!!!!

I would probably chose someplace other than a bankrupt state but believe me it will be better than the midwest.

That's what I was thinking...but if you think it will be better for you there I'm not telling not to go for it.

I did it ten years ago and it was the best thing I could have done... Funny I did it the opposite direction.. Cali to Michigan

Packed up my clothes, my records, my turntables and my mixer and that was it... didn't even have a job lined up...

Once you do something like this and realize it's all on you and that you can do it it helps you to realize that just about whatever life throws your way, you can handle it....

I'm in the same boat right now. I already closed up the shop a couple months ago It was literally falling apart and the landlord had zero interest in fixing it up. My lease was up and instead of resigning I said nope I'll just do mobile. But Flint Mi is one of the worst areas in the entire nation and it's only going to get worse. They laid off alot of the police. They just annouced they expect another 10,000 jobs lost in the immediate area this year. Crime is already skyrocketing. (more so than normal for this area) I have 2 weeks left of college (took some winter courses) and a little money to make a go at it. Been begging the wife to just let us pack up and go and she's about there herself. No clue where to go. I know Florida and Cali are in real bad shape right now too. Looked at S.Carolina and Texas. Both seem to be pretty much recession proof right now compared to other area's of the country. But you're definatly not the only one in this boat. Alot of people are doing exactly that.

Just realize California is generally one of the most expensive places to live in. We also have lots of laws that are restrictive to detailing.

Yes, i was thinking about the bankrupt state thing as well, but there are millions of people here with money, the whole govt. system is corrupt anyway! Ohio is nothing special and it never had money!

there is more opportunity for my career than where im currently located. Its like fashion, if someone is in the fashion industry, they have a better chance of making it in NYC or LA, rather than Detroit or Cleveland. This has became an important topic.

Good, im not the only one! The only reason cali and fl are soo bad was because of the housing and the amount of people laid off were in those states. It will all come back again, just not for another 5 years. Jake, what are your thoughts? Whats you reason for making the move?

This is true!! I see you reside in San Diego, this is my number one option. Where abouts are you located?

Mind you detailing wouldnt be my main source of income, but your right about the laws.

Thanks for all the replys so far guys!

I live in what is referring to as East County, in the city of El Cajon. I'm in the rural areas of that even, heh. But even still cheap houses around here are going to the cost the same as a decent mansion in many parts of the country. Gas and food are also more. I guess the bright side is that there are a lot of cars, and many car enthusiasts in the city.

San Diego is no joke as it pertaines to water runoff!!, I live in Nor Cal but I am originally from Dana Point.

The weather is unbeatable in SD almost yearound!! and If a few million(okay many millions)of dollars were to find me you would see me in Fairbanks Ranch NOW!!!!!!. As mentioned Cali is in a tough spot, and the cost of living will be shocking to you but we pay for the weather and activities that are possible.

Remember lot's more cars, but also lot's of competition as well.

LOL Mike that's actually one of the articles I was looking at when trying to find a place to move.

And the reason behind wanting to move so bad are many. 1 outside of the stint in Illinois and Colorado when my father was in the Military I've always lived in Michigan. I've always hated it. I know lots of people that have moved and I don't know a single person that has ever regreted it and wished they had did it sooner. 2. Michigan has the worst economy of all 50 states. And we got a triple whammy with the economy. Our's was the first for the housing market to pop. But most people in this state are employed in the automotive feild If you don't work for the Big 3 there's a good chance you work for someone that teirs to them somehow. With the Automarket crashing tens of thousands of jobs are gone. Then our government is just as broke as Cali's we had to borrow from the feds just to keep the unemployment going. I've had personal talks with our govenor on several occasions about this. Even Gov. Granholm herself told me if I had an opportunity to get out of here I should take it because it's not going to get any better anytime soon. Michigan put all it's eggs in one basket and that basket fell apart. The only thing we have to look forward to here is higher crime rates and more blight on cities. This whole movement to get Michigan to be the next "Hollywood" is nice and dandy but has very little to do with my life. I don't see how giving studio's millions in tax breaks helps better my life. If Michigan turns around it won't be for at least another decade. And that's only if they get stuff in place by the end of this year to do so.

And Finally. I want to be able to detail on a consitant basis more than 5 months out of the year. In a nutshell that's why I want out of here.

Jake - I'd be lying if I told you I hadn't looked at that article with the intentions of moving too...hehe! The economy isn't nearly as bad here as in MI, but I hate the weather. I like snow, but after it's about a day old, I'm over it. Plus, there's a reason why IN is one of the fattest states in America. I went to Scottsdale, AZ a couple years ago and fell in love with that place. Although, I know it's really expensive to live out there. I've heard the Denver area is nice, if you like all 4 seasons. I am not attracted to the big city life, I'm more of a simple person that likes to be out away from everything, but still have easy access to stuff. I'm still looking for where my dream place would be...

Anyway, I don't blame you one bit for wanting out of that apparent hell hole. I'd be wanting out too!

EDIT 1: I'm not sure how Fishers, IN made that list of best places to live. It's so congested and crowded up there it would drive me up the wall to live there. It's basically on the north side of Indy, and I'm on the west side.

EDIT 2: This might be a better list to look at: 25 top-earning towns - New Canaan, CT (1) - Money Magazine

I agree with you mike, im not a fan of the big city myself, but since im out here right now, I find myself more motivated. I'm staying with a friend, and we just when to the galleria here in LA(large shopping center) and in the parking garage, there were two guys detailing. I looked at the cars here what i saw: 2009 Range Rover Sport, 3-7 series BMWs, aston martin, one of the new jaguars(not sure of the name)...this was all withing a 2 hour period. Mind you they arent duing full details, but im sure you could convert some of them!

there are soo many cars here, you just need to meet the right people to get it started!

ahh, im going to do it, if all else fails, so be it, i can afford to gamble with 6 months of my life.
