Motomaster New Windshield Wipers = Bad!

Hi everyone,

I just picked up a set of Motomaster Teflon Windshield Wipers since they were on sale at Canadian Tire. They seemed to work well, but after one week of use I noticed a black buildup on windshield where the wipers rests and where they reach the end of their travel! It seems to rub off easily, but I was wondering what caused this? Is it a manufacturing defect? I use Rain-X on my windshield.. do you think that might have caused it?

Thanks!

From memory, I think Rain-X can effect wipers but I cannot remember what it does to them. Try a search on Rain-X

What condition is the glass, if it is slightly rough, I would wash and then clay and give the wipers a good clean also.

I find that many of the blades will have been sitting at the retailer for a long time, and have oxidized rubber on the outside. The first thing I do when I get new blades is to clean well with alcohol. I always notice black residue coming off. After that, you should have fewer problems with the black smears.

I've got fairly new Bosch Micro Edge wipers and did a rain X treatment recently. I too have the dreaded rubber build up where the wipers reaches the end of its wipe cycle, on the far left of the drivers side windshield.

I think its the Rain X that causes that but I don't know why. Only thing I can do is use some glass polish and remove the rubber.

Hi Everyone,

Well I've cleaned my wipers and rubber build up with rubbing alcohol. The marks were pretty hard to take out. What I'm confused about is my old wipers never had this problem, and they were just cheap-o wipers. Maybe Teflon and Rain-X don't like each other?

We're expecting rain tomorrow (always right after I wash and wax!) so I'll let you guys know how the wipers/rain-x hold up post treatment.

MotoMaster wipers - does that mean you live in Canada?

I'm trying a test with my winter wipers. I've got one MotoMaster w/teflon wiper on the driver's side and a Volvo wiper on the passenger side. Bought and installed them on the same day, about two weeks ago.

I've always like MotoMaster wipers, but I never looked for the rubber build up. I just went out and looked. There was some sort of black line, but it rubbed off. Maybe the salt helps dissolve it. I ran my finger along the edge of the MotoMaster wiper and black stuff came off. Nothing came off the edge of the Volvo blade.

Hi Everyone,

Taxlady, yes I do live in Canada eh! :) Kitchener, Ontario. About 1 hour west of Toronto. I want to update my profile, but I can't figure out how to do it. :)

I used my wipers again today since it was raining and there doesn't appear to be any black stuff on the glass. Black stuff still rubs off on my fingers from the blade however. Do you use Rain-X too?

I put up this thread http://www.autopia.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=16323

to ask about Prestone Wiper Blade Restorer which I've seen at Canadian Tire. I get black gunk on my wipers even if the windshield is bare (got it replaced a few weeks ago) so I'm wondering if it's just oxidizing rubber.

So I'll try this stuff and see what happens (and see if it helps with some chattering I'm getting too). Some people also use 303 I think....
