More on glass cleaning.

I'm obsessed this week with getting the windows perfect and with no job maybe I have to much time on my hands.

Anyway yesterday I bought a Glass Wizard and I got my windows cleaner than I ever did before, however at dusk took a drive and drove directly into the sunset and could see a a slight amount of film smudges in spots.

I remembered in my younger days in local bars that the old time bartenders used a drop of vodka to clean their eyeglasses and said it was the only thing that would get the bar room film off them, thought I'd try it.

The glass wizard came with a small spray bottle for spritzing water on windows, I filled it with Vodka.

I have to say my windows could not get any cleaner, no smudges whatsever.

We have large mirrored closet doors that we can never get perfect and I did them, perfect also.

I tried a couple other windows and found that if they were dirty it did not work well but if you clean them first then do a final with a vodka spritz they come out perfect.

Disclaimer, breathing the Vodka fumes for hours in close quarters did not affect my observations.

just want to clarify - did u use vodka straight or diluted with water ?

BTW I liked your tip. I can spritz my tongue also while cleaning glass :D

Alcohol, is a common ingrediant in glass cleaners, although the amount of alcohol in glass cleaners is regulated by CARB, and as California goes...so goes the rest on the nation.

So...we may all soon be adding Vodka to our Glass Cleaners?....naw....makes a better martini....

Clearly drinking alcohol and even otc Alcohols are not cost effective.

A good quality Automotive Glass Cleaner is the ticket.

.......Where did your Glass cleaning thread disappear to?.........

The board crashed about midnight Monday, and when it came back up at about 3:00 AM Tuesday the latest posts were from Monday at approx. 8:00 AM... that must have been when they did their last backup. So it looks like everything posted between 8:00 AM Monday and midnight was lost.

If you are a truly obsessed detailer and like your windows spotless, here are a few tips.

1. Use a micro fiber towel.

2. Do not use fabric softener when you wash them. Fabric Softener is a cationic (positive) charged surfactant (soap). It will often rub off onto the glass making streaks!

3. You can do the same thing with Isopropyl Alcohol. You can get 70% alcohol from your local drug store. It is probably a lot cheaper than the Vodka. You just can't drink it.:D

I find Isopropyl Alcohol at MARC'S stores and dollar stores for about $0.79 - $0.89 a pint. I fill a 32 oz bottle with about 1/3 pint of IA and the rest water...some of the best glass cleaner I've used. I use the two-towel method with MF.

I found out another thing about windows.

Never use your California Duster on them, they leave a film that is very hard to get off.

I've got an idea! Absolute on the rocks in a spray bottle. I'd prefer the Citron for a lemon scent. Almost a spray martini. Wonder of dry vermouth would leave anything behind to streak the window.

First off I used Stolie, been told it is made with real potatoes and not chemicals in a lab like the cheap stuff..I think that makes a difference.

Second if you make it dry enough you just hold the unopened vermouth bottle over the vodka so that would not be a problem.

Third if it doesn't get your windows clean enough you can have a few slugs of it and not really care about the smudges on your windshield that no one else can see anyway.

Forth, remember you can clean windows with vodka but you can't make a martini with window cleaner.

~One mans opinion / observations~

So that’s what I’ve been doing wrong. But I’ve never noticed any smears on the glass after three or four hits of IPA

~Hope this helps~
