Money question

Question about payment..

1) When you receive payment, do you make sure of the amount in front of your client?

A) My answer is no, I check after leaving. (stupid I know, I just don't feel right thumbing through bills & doubting the client)

Whether you count in front or later, how do you handle tipping? Do you acknowledge the tip? "Thanks for the _______..."

Thanks for entertaining the stupidity...

If its a check I'll always look right after its handed to me. Both to see if the amount is correct and if they included a tip.

Cash is a little touchier but I think its better to count it out sooner rather than later. There just might be a generous tip in it that you don't know until you count it.

I always acknowledge the tip and thank them for their generosity. I say something like, "...and thank you for the tip. That's very generous of you and I appreciate it very much."

I accept tips, and I count it. I usually say something like " I really appreciate it man, thanks."

I try to be casual so they don't feel uncomfortable.

After a while you get good at the "fan and scan" customers almost always hand you cash either folded once, or flat.... if you just lightly fan the bills, and quickly look over them you can tell if it is exact, or including a nice tip. It has to be a real quick glance though.

Another option is to hand them a copy of the invoice and a pen and asjk them to sign it. Generally there is nothing for them to sign on, and they will turn into the garage or against the house or something, and that gives you a quick min. to flip through it.

Just say: "I received... count the bills while he/she's there xxx dollars..." We do this often to prevent us from BOTH receiving TOO MUCH or TOO LITTLE payment. There have been times that the customer gave too much and they were extremely grateful about us returning the money to them.

With new customers, I always look at the check and if they pay cash, it seems they always count it out in front of me. Regular customers, I usually just say 'thank-you" and pocket it. They know how much to pay and I've never had a problem.

I always graciously acknowledge tips without stating the amount.

Thanks for the help. I received my first detailing tip a couple days ago and didn't notice it till I drove off. Luckily, I was scheduled to do his wifes car yesterday and had a chance to thank him...once, again, there was a tip...!

You call your clients "man"....

I only have a few customers that are regulars and with them 1/2 the time when I return thier cars they are busy or in meetings etc .. I just let the girl know its back and I'll drop in in a day or 2 for the check .. if a tip is there I drop them a note thanking them.

New or one timers most count the money out to me .. and being a small town you never seem to get scammed. But I do a quick glance at the bills/check to see if all is ok

What % of your customers tip? I think a lot of customers don't know better to tip in this biz........

Sad to say I think you are right... Most people don't see we are doing a "service!" I don't look for a tip, but it's nice...

I've received 2 tips (1) for finding a lost item (1) for work done...

Having repeat biz is a big enough tip for me...
